Superdome workers — a few managers, a couple of security guards, a housekeeper, an engineer and a secretary — helped hold the place together after Hurricane Katrina last August. The roof ripped, water seeped in, lights flickered, toilets quit and about 25,000 frightened and frustrated people walked through the doors looking for shelter.
But from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, this team of everyday men and women kept the power on, cleaned the bathrooms and tried to calm the crowd. The last time they saw football in the Superdome, children displaced by the storm were doing touchdown dances in end zones fouled by human waste.
