The communist goals were entered into the Congressional record by Albert
Herlong, Jr. (a Floridian who served in Congress from 1949-69).

1) US acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.

2) US willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.

3) Develop the illusion that total disarmament by the US would be a
demonstration of "moral strength."

4) Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist
affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.

5) Extension of long term loans to Russia and Soviet Satellites.

6) Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.

7) Grant recognition of Red China, and admission of Red China to the UN.

8) Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of
Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the Germany question by free
elections under supervision of the UN.

9) Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the US has agreed
to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.

10) Allow all Soviet Satellites individual representation in the UN.

11) Promote the UN as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is
rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one world government with its own
independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be
taken over as easily by the UN as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers
compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo).

12) Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.

13) Do away with loyalty oaths.

14) Continue giving Russia access to the US Patent Office.

15) Capture one or both of the political parties in the US.

16) Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American
institutions, by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17) Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for
Socialism, and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get
control of teachers associations. Put the party line in text books.

18) Gain control of all student newspapers.

19) Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or
organizations which are under Communist attack.

20) Infiltrate the press. Get control of book review assignments,
editorial writing, policy-making positions.

21) Gain control of key positions in radio, TV & motion pictures.

22) Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all form of
artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all
good sculpture from parks and buildings," substitute shapeless, awkward,
and meaningless forms.

23) Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to
promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."

24) Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship"
and a violation of free speech and free press.

25) Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography,
and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio and TV.

26) Present homosexuality, degeneracy, and promiscuity as "normal,
natural, and healthy."

27) Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social"
religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual
maturity, which does not need a "religious crutch."

28) Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools
on the grounds that it violates the principle of "separation of church and
state."

29) Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old
fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation
between nations on a worldwide basis.

30) Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish
aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man".

31) Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of
American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of "the big
picture": Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took
over.

32) Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any
part of the culture - - education, social agencies, welfare programs,
mental health clinics, etc.

33) Eliminate all laws or procedures, which interfere with the operation
of the Communist apparatus.

34) Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

35) Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.

36) Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.

37) Infiltrate and gain control of big business.

38) Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social
agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no
one but psychiatrists can understand or treat.

39) Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a
means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.

40) Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy
divorce.

41) Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence
of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children
to suppressive influence of parents.

42) Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate
aspects of the American tradition; that students and special interest
groups should rise up and make a "united force" to solve economic,
political, or social problems.

43) Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready
for self-government.

44) Internationalize the Panama Canal.

45) Repeal the Connally Reservation so the US can not prevent the World
Court from seizing jurisdiction over domestic problems. Give the World
Court jurisdiction over domestic problems. Give the World Court
jurisdiction over nations and individuals alike.

No wonder the Soviet Union fell apart. The people planning their expansion were idiots.

Yes, abstract art always makes me want to overthrow the government and give up private property. Was Calder trying to hypnotize us with his mobiles? Oh, no, there's one hanging over the baby's crib! Those dirty commies!

US willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war...

Heck yeah, nuke those Ruskies before they nuke us! You say they'll nuke us anyway? Thanks for the advice, Commie!!!

The really funny thing is that most of the sites that quote this say that these goals can be found in the "Communist Manifesto"...you know, the one written by Karl Marx before there was a Panama Canal or a Red China or a UN or a HUAC or an FBI....

Like #43. Overthrow colonial governments before natives are ready for self-government.
What our segregationist congressman really meant was that giving Blacks the right to vote was all a Commie plot.

Try this 1963 Communist Goals. The good Congressman apparently took the goals from The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. The site also has a link to the original Congressinal Record.
quote:
Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Nordman of De Land, Fla., is an ardent and articulate opponent of communism, and until recently published the De Land Courier, which she dedicated to the purpose of alerting the public to the dangers of communism in America.

At Mrs. Nordman's request, I include in the RECORD, under unanimous consent, the following "Current Communist Goals," which she identifies as an excerpt from "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen:

Everybody who's not a Communist would obviously prefer nuclear war to even the thought that Communists might exist. You mean you don't want to die in a nuclear war and lay waste to half the planet? You EVIL COMMIE SCUM!

4) Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.
Global free trade is a Communist plot!

8) Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the Germany question by free elections under supervision of the UN.
... Am I missing something? East and West Germany were "set up" as separate states by the Allies (which included those Godless Commie Americans) after World War II, to stop Germany from being a threat.

quote:
12) Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.
A completely unreasonable and evil goal for any Communist Party - surely those scum must appreciate that their political beliefs should be illegal in a free country - after all, they're only Communists because they're evil subversives, right?

quote:
13) Do away with loyalty oaths.
Now that one really is sneaky - they've noticed that the US Pledge of Allegiance is the only thing that holds the Western world together!

quote:
15) Capture one or both of the political parties in the US.
Most countries, having more than two political parties, are safe here.

32) Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture - - education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
Communists Found To Be Left Wing Shock!

33) Eliminate all laws or procedures, which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.
See 12...

quote:
39) Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.
This is presumably considered dangerous because people who seriously believe that these are "Communist threats" spend a lot of their time detained under the mental health laws, and so are particularly susceptible to brainwashing by their psychiatrists.

quote:
44) Internationalize the Panama Canal.
What??

Some of those are probably legitimate Communist goals, although I doubt that anybody who believed them would have actually put them in those terms, as if they were entirely and unremittingly evil and the only reason for them was to "destroy America"...

No, because when determining whether a document is genuine or not, much of the evidence comes from linguistic analysis (writing style, vocabulary, etc.), especially when the author of the document is unknown.

Most of the items in the Questionable Quotes section, however, are of sufficiently modern vintage that one can verify them through reference sources alone, and since quotes attributed to "anonymous" are generally of little interest to the "Is this true?" crowd, rarely is one called upon to employ linguistic analysis to verify them.

This is not really true. While there were plans to dismember Germany into separate states (and turn her into an agrarian economy), none of the plans were really that serious.

The reason for the separate states was that the western allies wanted a free, independent, and democratic Germany, while the Russians wanted a communist satelite. So the Western Allies mereged there occuspation zones and held elections. The Russians then later set up a Communist dominated satilite state in the east. (IIRC, the FRG was founded in 1949, while the GDR waited until 1955).

The Western Allies also wanted a quick intergretaion of the FRG into the west to provide another army against Russia. Russia never really trusted the Eastern bloc armies (and were proven correct in 1956), so they were less concerned with east German troops for use in any invasion of the West.

Point 1 - Not all Communist countries maintained good relations with Soviet Russia, notably, Yugoslavia, Albania, China and the rest of the so called "Bamboo curtain".

Point 2 - "12) Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party." As I understand it, in direct violation of the US constitution... during the McCarthy witchhunts, the Communists were still a legitimate party, no matter how illegitimate their goals may have been. (Communism's popularity was partly because of Capitalism's failures, including in the USA. While Soviet Communism is gone, many of these Capitalist failures remain)

Point 3 - "13) Do away with loyalty oaths." Nah, they just want different ones.

Point 4 - "15) Capture one or both of the political parties in the US." Not that there'sa vast amount of difference between them... "both the political parties in the US"? There are more than two Mr Herlong.

Point 5 - "40) Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy
divorce." - Actually a look at Soviet Russia shows it to be pretty monogamous, and not so much worse than its predecessor. Homosexuality wasn't
exactly rife in the USSR either.

"The reason for the separate states was that the western allies wanted a free, independent, and democratic Germany, while the Russians wanted a communist satelite."

Well that's the fairy tale version. The truth is that the Western Allies manipulated West Germany, but in a different way... and perhaps less brutally. After WWII the USA didn't just "denazify" Germany (why didn't Austria get "denazified"?) they deliberately americanised it and redirected its economy so that when it was up and going the Germans would be inter-dependent upon the USA. At the same time the USA and the rest of the Western Allies made money off Germany, although not to such an extreme degree as in the WWI aftermath that swept Hitler to power in the first place.

"Russia never really trusted the Eastern bloc armies (and were proven correct in 1956), so they were less concerned with east German troops for use in any invasion of the West."

Nor the Western Allies entirely
with West Germany which is why they had their troops stationed there for years after. It wasn't just the fact that there was the whole point of them being their mortal "Nazi" (not all Germans were Nazi of course) enemies shortly beforehand, but for the simple reason that many of them had relatives in East Germany, particularly Berlin which had been a magnet for people from all over Germany during the 20s and 30s... and also that there was a number of ethnic Germans moved to Germany from Central Europe whose loyalty was in doubt, some of them settling as far west as Cologne.

Point 2. This is true but they did try. The communist control act of 1954 was passed and made being a member of the communist party a felony.

point 3. By loyalty oaths they mean the ones that teacher and professors were made to reconize before being hired.

While I realise the Communist party was linked up with the USSR... did the Teutonists and Nazis in mid-20th C. America receive so much attention? And is it right to outlaw them, but not outlaw the other extreme? I realise there have been attempts to clap down on the far right, but they're still there.

I think oaths are pretty meaningless. Anyone can say an oath if they have the will to, actions speak louder than words as they say. There's all too many people out there who respect power as much as real morality - that's the sad thing.

Actually yes. One of the initial purposes of the House Unamerican Activities Committee was to monitor the activities of the Bund.

COINTELPRO was initially and most sucessfully used against the Klan. The FBI felt that no jury in the south would convict a white man for actions against a black man, so they decided instead to disrupt the Klan instead. The action was extremely sucessful and eventually juries would convict Klan members.

Until September 10, 2001, the FBI was probably more concerned with right-wing milita groups than left wing groups (and rightfully so). There are no true Marxist groups of any importance left in the US, the left wing groups, even those calling themselves communist or Marxist, are really more anarcist. They are a danger, but more to property at the occasional anti-capitalism rally than anything else.

Right wing groups were never really an organized threat, as they had no foriegn sympathizers. Oklahoma City destroyed any sympathy they had, and then they became more interested in Y2K issues.

The Communist Party itself was never reallly a threat. Unlike the UK, most of the worst US spies were never associated with communist groups, but did it for money. McCarthy was a fool. He was looking in the wrong place. If you really were a communist spy (or sympathizer), the last thing you wanted was to be a member of the communist party.
