So, he has to drain the gas tank on his car and push it to the parking lot? And many chemicals regularly found in a school can be made to explode, even flour, cornstarch and things like that can be explosive, if you know what you're doing.
This is a long way away from when teachers and students used to make TNT in high-school chemistry, as a demonstration.

Ammonium Tetra-chloride. When it dries, it goes BOOM! Unfortunately, it is also very unstable, and a rapid change in barometric pressure can be enough to make it blow - and I am talking just a fast moving cold front!!
We made it every year in chemistry in high-school.
