I get regular updates from the AFA--I find it useful and psychologically satisfying to rewrite their letters of complaint into letters of praise, and vice versa--and recently I got this one.
October 11, 2006
Dear Glowy Chloe,
How important are the upcoming elections? Extremely important! Below is a list of what we can expect if the liberals win. These elections are crucial. It is vitally important that you vote. Please vote and encourage others to do the same. As bad as things are, they will be infinitely worse if the liberals win.
The strategy of the liberals is to get Values Voters so disgusted and discouraged that they will not vote. If that happens, the liberals will have achieved their goal and they will be running our country.
Here is what we can expect if the liberals win:
Amnesty for 12,000,000 illegal immigrants.
A push to make homosexual marriage and polygamy legal in all 50 states.
Only liberal judges will be appointed. They will create laws to implement the social agenda liberals cannot get passed through the legislative process.
Liberals will make the killing of the unborn more difficult to stop.
Liberals will continue to try to rid our society of Christian influence, including any reference to God in our Pledge and on our currency.
A return to the "Fairness Doctrine" in broadcasting where opposing views must be given equal time. Every conservative talk show host will be forced to give a liberal equal time on every issue. The purpose of this rule will be to shut down conservative talk shows.
An increase in taxes to push new social programs.
Passing a new "hate crimes" law making it illegal to refer to homosexuality in a negative manner.
Liberals will give terrorists from other countries who try to kill Americans the same rights American citizens enjoy under our constitution.
We will withdraw from Iraq, sending the message to the terrorists that if they will just be patient they can win and bring their terrorist acts to the U.S.
Go Vote! Encourage Others To Do The Same. Sign up to stayed informed! Visit the American Family Association at www.AFA.net today!
Sincerely,
Donald E. Wildmon, Founder and Chairman American Family Association

I have absolutely no problems with any of these things. In fact, a lot of these are already in place in some way, shape or form in Canada.
They're making it sound as if granting protection to gays is a bad thing. This is just the ramblings of a bigoted organization, IMO.

Guess maybe I'll have to register as a "Liberal" next time around.
Loved this one:
"Passing a new "hate crimes" law making it illegal to refer to homosexuality in a negative manner."
Whatever would we do if we couldn't refer to teh gay in a derogatory manner?

You are getting the same mailings I do. Somehow, they have "figured out" that I am a conservative Republican. As for their points:
quote:Here is what we can expect if the liberals win:
Amnesty for 12,000,000 illegal immigrants.
Wow, maybe they will get treated like humans...
quote:A push to make homosexual marriage and polygamy legal in all 50 states.
When did the gay agenda become the polygamy agenda? Otherwise, no problem, as long as those "liberals" don't force my church to recognize these unions.
quote:Only liberal judges will be appointed. They will create laws to implement the social agenda liberals cannot get passed through the legislative process.
Change "liberal" to "conservative", and you have what is going on now.
quote:Liberals will make the killing of the unborn more difficult to stop.
Hum. Conservatives have been in charge for a while, yet we still have abortion. My guess is with "liberals" in charge, things won't get much worse.
quote:Liberals will continue to try to rid our society of Christian influence, including any reference to God in our Pledge and on our currency.
Okay, this one is funny. Maybe liberals will even make our money colorful, like they have in the rest of the world. Oh yea, and they will restore the pledge to its origonal version, pre red-scare days...
quote:A return to the "Fairness Doctrine" in broadcasting where opposing views must be given equal time. Every conservative talk show host will be forced to give a liberal equal time on every issue. The purpose of this rule will be to shut down conservative talk shows.
This one was also very funny. "Conservatives: We don't want fairness..." was not my idea of a good slogan.
quote:An increase in taxes to push new social programs.
Yes, evils like health care and maybe even good schools...
quote:Passing a new "hate crimes" law making it illegal to refer to homosexuality in a negative manner.
Okay, maybe they got this one right...Okay, no they didn't. I can't see "them" passing laws to restrict free speech.
quote:Liberals will give terrorists from other countries who try to kill Americans the same rights American citizens enjoy under our constitution.
What? Treat them like humans?
quote:We will withdraw from Iraq, sending the message to the terrorists that if they will just be patient they can win and bring their terrorist acts to the U.S.
I think it sends the message that we are not good in this "nation building" thing.
quote:P.S. Please forward this e-mail message to your family and friends!
Thank you for forwarding this. It will really help me to remember to vote in November.
So I might agree with one issue (the abortion thing), but that is about it.

If the Liberals get in they will instantly turn conservative. Learn from the example of the UK. Mind you they are still better at running the country than the conservatives were. (Which isn't exactly saying a lot)

Chloe, I think you are right. It seems like everyone has taken three steps to the right since 9-11, and probably gradually since Reagan.

I only hope that if they do get elected, they devise a solid set of ideas to move the coutnry ahead. The retribution temptation could be very strong. I hope they are strong enough to resist it.

And outlawing abortions will prevent them from happening, of course, just as it did before Roe vs. Wade. Ah, those were the days, when perhaps as many abortions happened as today, but at least the trollops were afraid of the procedure...

'Cause, you know, Bush is suddenly going to fall in line behind something most Democrats aren't even calling for just because they've won one house of Congress.
quote: A push to make homosexual marriage and polygamy legal in all 50 states.
Let's see, polygamy is most common in which state? Oh yeah, Utah, which has been the most Republican state in the country for some time now. As for homosexual marriage, there already is a push for that in all 50 states, and it ain't going away regardless of who the Speaker of the House is.
quote: Only liberal judges will be appointed. They will create laws to implement the social agenda liberals cannot get passed through the legislative process.
Because if the Democrats take over the House, that whole constitutional provision reserving appointment of judges for the executive branch [ETA: and the approval of the nominations for the Senate, which the Dems are unlikely to take over] is going to go out the window magically.
quote:A return to the "Fairness Doctrine" in broadcasting where opposing views must be given equal time. Every conservative talk show host will be forced to give a liberal equal time on every issue. The purpose of this rule will be to shut down conservative talk shows.
In a way, they're right about this one. If Rush and the gang were forced to answer for the misinformation they spread around, they just might end up being shut down. Okay, not really, but a guy can dream.
quote:An increase in taxes to push new social programs.
Let's hope so.
quote:Passing a new "hate crimes" law making it illegal to refer to homosexuality in a negative manner.
If your definition of "refering to homosexuality in a negative manner" includes things like chaining gay people to a fence and beating them to death. Nah, that shouldn't be illegal at all.
quote:Liberals will give terrorists from other countries who try to kill Americans the same rights American citizens enjoy under our constitution.
Why are the people who have been lining up and taking turns begging Bush to take away a few more constitutional rights ever since 9/11 worried about that?
You're right, that was fun. Now, if anyone is wondering what we really can expect if the Dems win, Nancy Pelosi has some very promising proposals out there, and they're none too radical. What's really interesting is that the Democratic majority - if there is one - will come without a majority of the South. That will mark the first time since 1954 that either party will have a majority based outside the South. Of course, 1954 was also the year of Brown v. Board of Education. Draw your own conclusions on that one!
BTW, Chloe, I know it's none of my business, but are you a US citizen? I hope so, so that you can vote against those AFA jokers...but I'm amused at the idea that they might be spending their resources to someone who couldn't vote for them if she wanted to anyhow.

Just don't tell them where you're from, or you'll get an earful about how you'd still be in charge if we'd listened to the liberals about gun control in 1775. But I guess they'd still have to let you vote if you tried to blow them up.

Yes, and the good thing is that I don't get *all* the rights--just the ones you guys are most enjoying. Which are those, do you think? And which ones are you just tolerating?

Last time I checked, judges can't "create laws" at all. Although maybe that's something teh liberals are also planning to change when elected.

I don't want to turn this into an abortion thread, and I realize you were kind of joking, but honestly I think abortion would logically remain legal even if the fetus were defined as human and given full rights. It could only be given equal rights, not more rights than anyone else. Nobody else has the right to claim and use someone else's organs without permission. [/hijack]

I can see the next FAF newsletter headline: "Liberals will allow terrorists to VOTE!"

Don't be saying that out loud, my wife (the ever present "optimist") says there is still time for the Democrats to screw up enough to lose the elections.

Did you have a look at the link I posted? If so, why are you repeating the Republican party line? I don't mean to be snarky, it's just that "Democrats have no new ideas" is something the Republicans have been saying for over a decade now, even in times when it was demonstrably untrue. Ironically, they owe their majority to a Democratic "new idea" - universal health care - in the first place.

I quite often enjoy Amendment 7 of the Bill of Rights which protects me from Double Jeopardy, because I *totally* ran that red light! Nothing they can do about it now, man! Suckers!
However, I think I simply tolerate the Second Amendment.

Are they actively trying to torpedo their own agenda? The only ones who might get pursaded to vote conservative by that text is the hard core conservatives who would never vote liberal anyway. Propaganda aimed at the people already convinced is a waste of time.

It's not a waste of time if they're concerned about getting their base out to vote, and word on the street is that they are. You are correct that people who think that way wouldn't vote Democratic if their lives depended on it, but in light of the Mark Foley mess and a few other issues, a significant number of them may not vote at all. I'm pretty sure that letter is just designed to scare them into doing so.
