I really hate to ask, since this IS reposted from MySpace and we all know how reliable their facts can be [Roll Eyes] . But, can anyone verify/discount this?

This is a newsletter that St. Mary's church in Colorado Springs sent out this week:

If Your Child is a Gothic, Reform Through the Lord!

Listed below are some warning signs to indicate if your child may have gone astray from the Lord. Gothic (or goth) is a very obscure and often dangerous culture that young teenagers are prone to participating in.
The gothic culture leads young, susceptible minds into an imagined world of evil, darkness, and violence. Please seek immediate attention through counselling, prayer, and parental guidance to rid your child of Satan's temptations if five or more of the following are applicable to your child:

-Frequently wears black clothing.
-Wears band and/or rock t-shirts.
-Wears excessive black eye makeup, lipstick or nailpolish.
-Wears any odd, silver jewelry or symbols. Some of these include: reversed crosses, pentagrams, pentacles, ankhs or various other Satanic worshipping symbols.
-Shows an interest in piercings or tattoos.
-Listens to gothic or any other anti-social genres of music. (Marilyn Manson claims to be the anti-Christ, and publicly speaks against the Lord. Please discard any such albums IMMEDIATELY.)
-Associates with other people that dress, act or speak eccentrically.
-Shows a declining interest in wholesome activities, such as: the Bible, prayer, church or sports.
-Shows an increasing interest in death, vampires, magic, the occult, witchcraft or anything else that involves Satan.
-Takes drugs.
-Drinks alcohol.
-Is suicidal and/or depressed.
-Cuts, burns or partakes in any other method of self-mutilation. (This is a Satanic ritual that uses pain to detract from the light of God and His love. Please seek immediate attention for this at your local mental health center.)
-Complains of boredom.
-Sleeps too excessively or too little.
-Is excessively awake during the night.
-Dislikes sunlight or any other form of light. (This pertains to vampires promoting the idea that His light is of no use.)
-Demands an unusual amount of privacy.
-Spends large amounts of time alone.
-Requests time alone and quietness. (This is so that your child may speak to evil sprits through
meditation.)
-Insists on spending time with friends while unaccompanied by an adult.
-Disregards authority figures; teachers, priests, nuns and elders are but a few examples of this.
-Misbehaves at school.
-Misbehaves at home.
-Eats goth-related foods. Count Dracula cereal is an example of this.
-Drinks blood or expresses an interest in drinking blood. (Vampires believe this is how to attain Satan. This act is very
dangerous and should be stopped immediately.)
-Watches cable television or any other corrupted media sources. (Ask your local church for proper programs that your
child may watch.)
-Plays videos games that contains violence or are of a role-playing nature.
-Uses the internet excessively and frequently makes time for the computer.
-Makes Satanic symbols and/or violently shakes head to music.
-Dances to music in a provocative or sexual manner.
-Expresses an interest in sex.
-Masturbates
-Is homosexual and/or bisexual.
-Pursues dangerous cult religions. Such include: Satanism, Scientology, Philosophy, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism and Buddhism.
-Wears pins, stickers or anything else that contains these various phrases: "I'm so gothic, I'm dead", "woe is me", "I'm a goth".
-Claims to be a goth.

If five or more of these apply to your child, please intervene immediately. The gothic culture is dangerous and Satan thrives within it. If any of these problems persist, enlist your child into your local mental health center.

I can't verify wether or not it really came from St. Mary's Catholic Church, however, I can say I have seen similar or heard similar things coming from Christian churches before, especially when the list is about one of the "cult religions" it lists.

BTW. I have to say, What. The. ****? to this bit:

quote:
- Pursues dangerous cult religions. Such include: "Satanism, Scientology, Philosophy, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism and Buddhism."
Cult religions like philosophy??? Not to mention, Satanism, Paganism, Wicca, Hinduism, and Buddhism. But the one that really gets me is Philosophy. That is the weirdest thing I've ever heard.

Would the parents to whom this is supposedly addressed really need to be reminded that church constitutes a "wholesome" activity? If so, maybe they've been spending too much time alone watching cable TV!!

WTF? Almost half of those are the normal attitudes of most teenagers.

I especially enjoyed the line about the decrease in interest in wholesome activities. Three of the four activities mentioned have to do with religion. Yeah, I know all the teenagers I know at one point in their childhood showed enthusiasm for going to church and praying. Someone needs to tell St. Mary's that maybe it's not the Goth culture that turned the kids away, it's the fact that church is boring.

Personally I'd be much more worried about symbols themselves worshipping.

I have a hard time believing it's real based on the weird way this is written. Of course I could be wrong, and this particular church may have subcontracted Nigerian scammers to do all their writing for them.

Goth culture is obscure? I guess the mall stores selling goth clothing and accessories led me to believe that it was fairly widespread. That and the fact that it's been around since I was a teenager 20+ years ago.

I've seen this before, and the whole list is stupid, but the one that pisses me off most is the one about requesting quiet time and aloneness. I just picture some poor kid who wants to be alone with his/her thoughts and have some peace, being harassed by their paranoid parents.

Having been a dressed-in-black New Waver in the mid 80's, I'd be delighted to see my kids turn Goth. At least, we'd share similar musical tastes.

And BTW, it's better to have Goth kids than see your offspring start listening to Gangsta' Rap, steal fast cars, deal crack and go to school with an UZI. I guess.

But OK, I'll pay attention. If one of my kids starts to attend the church, quote the Bible or becomes one of those weird, everlasting-plastic-smile-on-their-face Jesus freaks, I'll intervene at once. I swear.

You know truth be told I don't understand practically any of these little "counter culture" groups, I love Goths.

Why? Because out of all the rebellious (in a comformist kinda way), pseudo-tough, wanna be edgy little groups that the disseffective amoungst latch onto... they are they only ones who keep to themselves.

Goths aren't driving down the road blasting bass heavy rap, they aren't on TV holding up a mug of beer and going "WHHHHOOOOOO!" to a camera during spring break, and if by some chance I am forced into a conversation with one of them, if pressed they are usually capable of communicating in English.

They dress in black, keep quiet, and leave other people, most importantly me, alone. I love people like that.

I've got it back to a Feb., 2004 post to alt.gothic. The poster says he was given a pamphlet with this in it, by a woman soliciting donations outside a Walmart.. The woman said she was collecting donations for "Belen's local Catholic school." The pamphlet concluded with an attributution to "St. Mary's Catholic Church."

I think this really traces back to a St. Mary's School, not Church.

There is a Saint Mary's Catholic School in Belen, New Mexico. The school is affiliated with Our Lady of Beln Catholic Church.

It is most often attributed to St. Mary's Cathedral in Colorado Springs.

They have contacted snopes to deny authorship.

I would point out that this obviously applies to absolutely anyone on the face of the planet, but we were all thinking it, so why bother?

Well, for what it's worth, here's somebody who doesn't deny authorship.

This post from August 1999 to uk.people.gothic points us to

http://www.redmusic.com/goths/warning.html

where the list is reproduced (and where it obviously appeared seven summers ago).

The owner of the site claims to be the author of this text. (In fact, he claims that it comes from a larger work that is "[t]he most popular and misunderstood thing I ever wrote.") Some pages within the site credit Benjamin Covelo as this piece's author; others credit Josh Ross, owner of palaverist.org.

I'm so glad that SOMEONE in the Catholic church is finally standing up to all this gothic culture. Maybe we can finally get that Notre Dame Cathedral torn down, what with all its gothic spires and design elements.

And maybe we can finally get all those gothic, Gregorian Chant albums banned for good.

And maybe the Pope will finally grow a set of balls and march into St. Stephens Church and yank that gothically decorated Bible off of the alter and burn it!

BAH! All these gothic elements! Evil is everywhere!

I wish I had a scanner for this (I can't find the image on the web anywhere), but I have a newspaper ad for a local church. The image is a close up of a teen girl's face, wearing a hoop nose ring (sorry, I don't know the technical name; the kind that's looped between the two nostrils, like an ox) and rings in her lips, as well as heavy black eyeliner. Right above the image it says:

Pierced? Jesus was too...

 Now that's just downright funny to me. I see David Letterman in my mind:

Wouldn't that be a pretty unreliable method? Anyone who has to go around claiming to be a goth is probably a poseur.
