My wife was told by a one of her coworkers that the reason breaking a mirror will get you seven years worth of bad luck is that in some past time seven years was the amount of time a servant's pay would be docked to pay off breaking a mirror in his or her employers house. Of course there were no specifics such as era or country.

I did also see the origin that your wife's co-worker stated. Most of the sites that I googled were personal web sites, so to be taken with a grain of salt...
