Matthew 5:38-39
quote:
You have heard that it was said, "Eye for eye, tooth for tooth." But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
I wanted to add that to make clear Christians are not supposed to return "eye for eye."

I think it's inaccurate to use apathy as an argument against a religion. MickeyBlue seems to think that because not all Christians follow all the Christian laws (and some he mentioned are not in the Bible at all), then Christianity is invalid. Every major religion on this planet has more apathetic followers than whole-hearted followers. In Thailand most people would say they are Buddhist because that's what their families have been for generations. But if you ask about specific teachings, or the significance of things they regularly do at temple, they couldn't tell you. (I experienced this first hand). I'd bet a large percentage of people in Muslim countries are not following the laws because they fully understand the teachings of Islam and wish to follow them. They follow because there are steep punishments for not obeying. Every religion has a large percentage of people who claim to be believers, but do so only out of tradition, not because they have examined what they believe. This doesn't make the religion less or more valid.

Finally, suicide bombers kill not out of great faith, but out of great hate. That is never commendable.

Jesus never goes on to explain what you should do after that second cheek gets struck, too. Go back to the first one and repeat until deyou're knocked down, and them let him kick your other cheeks?

Silly rabbi, kicks are for trids.

And First of Two did say unto them: "Turn to them the other cheek, and then say, thou mayst strike the other cheek if it is thy will, but I shalt most assuredly smite thee off the face of the frickin' Earth if thee dost, dumbass."

Jambalaya is best made with ham or andouille (pork) sausage. Gumbos can be made with almost any fish or meat, including pork.

See second and third recipes on this page.

Mmmmmm. I'm getting some ideas for dinner.

The glurge writer must be from the East Coast. We have primarily beef (sometimes chicken)barbecue here in Texas. Actually, living in a place with only pork barbecue made me very sad.

As for what to say to the glurge sender, it depends. If it's someone you have a close relationship with, I would mention it offended you with the possibility for further discussion of why in a non-confrontational way. Hiwever, my own mother sends me crap like this all the time. Arguing with her is like arguing with my cat so I just delete and add to the list of annoyances. This one's pretty bad, though. I might mention my distaste even to my mother for this one.

As far as I can tell, in the US at least, veil wearing is completely voluntary, and a show of faith, like wearing a cross. If one is wearing a veil cause they want to, why is that bad?

Actually it depends on what country you're in. I had a teacher from Egypt who said that within the last few years many young Egyptian women have adopted a short skirt, crop top style of dress popularized by western MTV stars so wearing traditional Muslim cloths is voluntary in that country. In Afghanistan under the Taliban women had to be covered from head to toe with only a small slit for the eyes to see out of in the vail and were not allowed in public without a male escort. In Iran after the revolution in the late 1970s they had all swiming pools drained because bathing suits were immodist. In Saudi Arabia women must follow a strict dress code when in public, this does not apply to women who work in the Crown Prince's palaces who dress like western women tho.

Yes, it was awful. I know several others have said you should not remain silent on this one, and I have to voice my agreement. I get things like this all the time from my family. As much as I love and have a good relationship with my family, a lot of them are, well, completely racist.

When they email me things like this, or make horribly offensive comments around me, I would like to remain silent so I don't have to try & argue with them, but - it is important to speak up! They will never realize how offensive their opinions are until someone says something and tries to explain why an email like the one in the OP is so awful. Fight racism and ignorance on all fronts. It's important.

Everyone seems to be wondering why Muslim terrorists are so quick to commit suicide.
Really? ALL Muslim terrorists are quick to commit suicide? In that case, there shouldn't be any left!

quote:
Let's see now:

No Jesus, No television,

No baseball, No football, No basketball,

No hockey, No golf, No tailgate parties.

No Home Depot, No Wal-Mart.

No pork BBQ, No hot dogs, No burgers, No lobster, No shellfish, or even frozen fish sticks, No gumbo, No jambalaya.

What is so awful about not having these things? This may come as a horrible shock to whoever wrote this, but humanity survived for thousands of years without any of this stuff, and did just fine. If Home Despot and Wanker-Mart and all the other big-box stores, along with fast-food places and junk food, had never been created, would we be worse off without them? Besides, if you've never had these things, then how can you miss them?

quote:
More than one wife.

Why is this a problem? It's rather common throughout the world, even here in the USA--and not just amongst Mormons, either. Multiple wives (or husbands) doesn't make one an evil person; it just makes one different.

quote:
Rags for clothes and diapers for hats.
The clothing worn by desert-dwelling people is made a certain way for certain reasons, and not solely for considerations of fashion. Long, loose robes in multiple layers, plus a head covering, are vital if you don't want to get sunburned. If I'm not mistaken, the turban is a single length of fabric that can be unwound to make a body covering or blanket as well as serving as head covering. Very practical.

quote:
You can't shower to wash off the smell of donkey cooked over burning camel dung.

Is donkey even considered a "clean" food to Muslims? I thought they could eat only cloven-hoofed, cud-chewing animals, or something like that.

If you live in a land where wood is scarce and camel dung is common, what are you going to use for your cook fire? In parts of Africa, cattle dung is used the same way. In any case, I'm sure a great many Muslims have electric or gas stoves. Not everybody "over there" lives like Neanderthals.
