I cried when I read this. I remember reading about this animal in National Geographic when I was a kid. I thought it was a beautiful, magical animal. Of course, all dolphins seem magical.
And now it is gone. The first of many mammals we are soon bound to lose, I think.

They've given up, then? I saw a story about how badly the search was going a few weeks ago, and almost posted it.
It's really sad. They'd planned out a way to try to save them, set up an oxbow lake cut off from the main river as a reserve, but when they came to look for dolphins to populate it they just couldn't find any... there are none left.
No, none in zoos, Doug. They're actually gone.

Oh, how terrible. Something like this makes me both sad and angry.

Horse Chestnut, I remember reading about them as a kid too and I remember thinking how cool it was that dolphins could live in a river (as opposed to an ocean).

;_; That's really sad. I read about the baiji in Last Chance to See, by Douglas Adams. He talked about all these plans the Chinese government had to try to save them; of course the book was written a couple decades ago, so I guess it shouldn't really surprise me.
