We have a 3 year old Silky Terrier. He's been having alot of skin irritation and his fur is falling out so I took him to the vet. I was really surprised but the vet is testing him for thyroid problems. I've never heard of small or toy breeds having thyroid issues, just bigger breeds. When I look at some of the symptoms it does seem possilbe though. Anyone ever had a small dog with this problem?

Not personally, but I understand thyroid problems are pretty common in Shelties.

We have a sheltie with a thyroid problem. She has a pill once a day.

Horse Chestnut-yes, thyroid problems run in certain sheltie lines. It depends on the line, though. Schipperke's also have a thyroid problem. (The little, black dogs in the working group.)

Well the vet called Saturday and said yes, it was a thyroid problem. He (Ozzy)will take a pill twice a day. I had heard of shelties with thyroid troubles, but rarely toy breeds.
Perhaps his fur will grow in thicker now!

Thank you for the info Morrigan - interesting reading.
He had Demodex and was quite uncomfortable when we took him to the vet. I had searched on Demodex a bit since I had mostly heard of it as Red Mange in pups and wanted to make sure our chihuahua and kids were not going to be infected.
I had always put Ozzy's cold intolerance off on being a toy breed (since they often shake when cold), as for being almost depressed-I figured he was just moody. Coat-wise I just thought he was a homely dog, LOL.
