So I get a call from DD2 when she gets home from school, because our mastiff, Rex, didn't get up to greet her when she came home and wouldn't play ball. I rush home, and DS2 and I take Rex to the vet because his left hind foot is swollen. The vet suspects abcess, but doesn't see an actual injury site, so sends us home with antibiotics and a recommendation to soak his foot in epsom salts. I did compresses instead, and now there's a red spot showing at the juncture of two toes. So it looks like back to the vet tomorrow to have it drained.
Poor baby just lays on his blankie and lets me apply the compresses. The vet said he'd put him out to drain it, since you can't really make a 200+ lb dog hold still if he doesn't want to. I'm hoping the anesthetic doesn't mean he has to stay overnight, I don't think this vet has kennels big enough, so that would mean putting him in an outside run. [Frown] If I have to, I'll take the day off work to stay home with him.

Sick pets are worse than sick humans - humans can at least understand what you are trying to do to help. The vet might be able to give sedation (think drunken mastiff!) rather than full anaesthesia.

I don't think anesthesia alone means he'll have to stay overnight. But, they might want him to stay overnight to give fluids or antibiotics. If Rex does have to stay overnight, maybe they can give him his own room??

Vet says since its 'surfacing' it will probably drain on its own. I'm keeping up the compresses and now its oozing a little. Fortunately, he good about letting us treat him. He'll let me poke around on his foot and will only pull it away when I press on the swollen parts (can't blame him, though!)
