I'm caught between [Frown] and [Mad] :

Somerset man charged in gruesome abuse of infant

quote:
SOMERSET — A 21-year-old Somerset father is in jail after police charged him with repeatedly abusing his infant, including jolting the baby with a stun gun.
There's more, but I can't bear to quote it. But apparently the abuse started when this baby was four days old and went on for two months, when she was taken out of the home.

God DAMN it. Chlorine is not doing the job, I say we drain the gene pool and acid-wash it.

Why, are they illegal? Or just hard to come by? I only ask because my mother-in-law has one. She carries it with her when she walks in the park in case she's "attacked by the gays". [Roll Eyes]

That's would be my guess. Maybe she was afraid that he'd kill her if she did anything. Emotional abuse can be a powerful thing.

Ok, this is when tourture should be allowed. They need to stick him in a room with convicts, and tell the convicts what he did. The last words the cops should say when they leave the room is, "Just don't kill him." I feel the same about child molesters as well... is it harsh? Hell yes. But the abuser would never, EVER think about doing anything like it again.

Would it be cruel and unusual punishment if I wanted to see his testicles stunned with the cattle prod on max a couple of times? I have two reasons for this idea- one, because maybe it will sterilize him; and two, because maybe it will hurt him as much as he hurt the child.

Okay, maybe it's harsh to want that. But seriously- how on EARTH can this man possibly do this to his own child, that has just been born!? He must have no heart to do this to his child.

Oh, and Forgotten Fay, I'm sorry about what happened in your past. I hope that your life since then, now, and in the future is much, MUCH better than what you've had to endure.

Bull. There is no honor in prisons there is just a pecking order of brutality with self-justification for flavoring. The fantasy that prisons have their own honor system is a sort of reverse 'myth of the rural idyll' - the notion that by dumping people in prison some sort of ideal notion of good and evil becomes apparent.

Why does it say daughter in the title of the OP? Not that it matters. It's horrid and I hope the man serves out his days in prison.

Of course, there's this other part of me that can't help but wonder how this wretched young man was treated as a child that would lead him to believe that's how you treat a baby.

That's just too sad. Poor baby.

Because the first item I saw about this case (CNN video -- I didn't know how to link to it) said the baby was a girl.

So does UPI:

quote:
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania man has been accused of violently abusing his newborn daughter, including breaking a leg and using an electric cattle prod on her.

Somerset Borough police say Brandon Alan Austill, a 21-year-old construction worker, began the abuse shortly after Candice was brought home by her mother, four days after her birth, and it continued over a 7-week period, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Oh I believe people are brutalised in prison I just don't believe its because the prisoners have some sense of 'honor'. I think it happens because the prisoners develop a convenient pecking order based on who is most vulnerable. Sex offenders along with gays and younger prisoners are all at high risk. People on the outside develop this happy little 'honor' fantasy to justify sadistic assaults as some sort of 'code of justice' whereas it simply is brutalised people being brutal to others with outsiders egging them on.

Its pathetic.

Unfortunately your system has been tested over and over, and hurting people does not make them less violent, even if they perceive their abuse to be punishment for something they've done wrong.

This story makes me as disgusted and sad as it does anyone else, but I'm as usual disturbed by people's descriptions of what they'd like done to this man. If you want to see someone tortured for their wrongdoings how can you put yourself on the moral high ground?

Yes, but why? Is that due to some kind of honor system or is it because these types of prisoner are believed to be weak?

Perhaps it's because the other prisoners believe they can get away with more because their crimes are reviled by society. In other words, they believe (perhaps rightly) that the guards are more likely to look the other way if they mistreat someone like that instead of, say, a burglar.

Because clearly violent criminal offenders can be trusted to administer justice.

I'd really like it if anyone who calls for this sort of "prison justice" to spend some time unsupervised with a violent offender at a State maximum security facility. Because the "honor among theives" thing should prevent you from being harrassed if you're not a rapist or child molester.

Using prisons as an animal cage where violent people are forced to use violence to survive doesn't do anyone any good. Encouraging this senseless violence, no matter the reason, would seem to indicate you're just another monster who wants a good reason to hurt people.

I don't care what your justification is or who you want to do the dirty work: Bloodlust is not acceptable in this society.

Citizens encouraging "Prison justice" is just the post-1970s version of lynching in the US.

Against WOMEN? Sorry, but I'd have to call bs on that. I've heard the "child molesters won't survive prision thing," but considering the sheer number of men incarcerated who committed crimes of rape/murder/dv or other gender-based crimes, I think your run-of-the-mill woman-hater would get along just fine, and might even find a supportive community.

Has anyone ever provided a cite for this? Does anyone do studies on the whys and wherefores of prison violence? I know there is a great deal of violence in prison, based on articles I've read, but I've never seen a study or even a non-academic article that discussed the demographics of what people are incarcerated for versus who gets abused.

I have read articles that indicated that within the prison social/ gang system there is a method to who gets beat up and when, but nothing about people getting hurt especially because of their offense.

Once I toured a county jail and the guard who was leading the tour said that child molesters and other "high risk" prisoners wear a special color of jumpsuit. This was supposed to identify them to the guards as being at risk for violence from other prisoners, but I wonder how that dynamic would actually play out. Do those prisoners ever interact with other prisoners? Do the other prisoners see them as walking targets because of their special jumpsuits? Do the guards turn a blind eye to violence against the special prisoners?

I hope very much that more research is done on this topic. If there is some kind of prison "justice" system it needs to be stopped.

I can offer my own experiences as a cook in the Vernon Parrish (County) Jail in the early 1980's.

Child abusers were automatically put in solitary for their own protection, and after talking to the inmates (some first offenders, others there for the umpteenth time awaiting transport to the State Pen), there IS a sense of honor. Don't talk bad about the country - and don't hurt a kid.

One repeat offender I spoke to (granted, it may have been BS) told me that a report was released of one inmate in Angola (Louisiana State Penitentiary) was a child molester. He said that he and "this big nigger" beat him to death.

When I later asked, he said that he was a minor leader in the Louisiana KKK, and hated Blacks - but the hatred of "baby rapers" went deeper than that. His involvement in the KKK was verified by the Sheriff's Office.

Anecdotal, but proof enough in my mind.

The rules were:

1. Never snitch.
2. There is strength in numbers.
3. Watch out for groups of "others" (those outside your group)
4. It doesn't matter what your crime, messing with kids was a killable offence, no matter what the official (legal) sentence was.

That is why abusers were put in solitary confinement... for their own safety.

--------------------
Opinions aren't excuses to remain ignorant about subjects, nor are they excuses to never examine one's beliefs & prejudices...

Babies are like tattoos. You see other peoples' & they're cool, but yours is never as good & you can't get rid of it.

Is there a news blackout on all the child-abusers killed in prison? 'Cause I must have missed all the stories.

In Kentucky, about 11 percent of the 20,000 inmates are sex offenders. That's about 2,200 people. I can't recall one of them being killed in the past few years.
