quote: man convicted of trying to rape an 83-year-old woman was sentenced to eight lashes with a cat-o'-nine-tails, a punishment used by the British navy in the 18th century and reinstated in the Bahamas 15 years ago.
Altulus Newbold, 34, was sentenced last Friday to 16 years in prison after being found guilty of burglary, attempted rape and causing harm. Justice Jon Isaacs also ordered that he receive four lashes of the whip at the start of his sentence and four upon his release, but suspended the punishment for three weeks pending a possible appeal.
The cat, a whip made of knotted cords, leaves flesh wounds and is used on the offender's back. Its use was reinstated in the former British colony in 1991 in the face of rising crime.

There has to be something entirely wrong with me, 'cause this dosen't bother me one whit. My only quibble is the number of lashes. Man tries to rape someone, and he gets eight? Pagh. Quite obviously, what we do with rapists doesn't help. Perhaps giving them a taste of pain and fear will dissuade some individuals.
And a cat simply doesn't do that much damage, provided the person wielding the device knows what they are doing....

This doesn't bug me one bit either. Thought I am sure it would make big news if the criminal was an American(i.e. the kid who was caned in Singapore about 10+ years back).

Well, caning is a bit of a different matter. It can cause much more lasting harm than a cat or a single-tail. Most of the time when properly applied, whipmarks, even when they break the skin, don't stay for very long, and they don't do that much damage to muscle. Canes do....

Are you guys really surprised that there are snopsters who are into BDSM? Particularly Ryda, who is a self-admitted bottom on many a thread (not that she's a bottom on the thread, but that's she's mentioned it a time or two on a thread)? Wow.

Not necessarily surprised. That's just my default reaction to BDSM.
Not against it, of course, just my default reaction ... what, can't I use the without being judged?!? Why do you hate me, Roadie?

Ryda "Yes, I know this from experience" Wong.
Just out of interest, if the person wielding the cat knows what they are doing enough to not inflict damage if they want, does that not also mean that the experienced operator, in a punative situation can use that knowledge to inflict damage by changing the way they use it?

Don't knock it 'til you've tried it, Canuck

Hey, that was my line, Roadie! I was gonna not vote for or do business with you!
I'm not knocking it, although I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't be for me, given my rather low tolerance for pain (reading threads on abortion notwithstanding).

Twas my thought exactly.
Ryda, I thought you were against corporal punishment. The involuntary type, I mean.

Yeah, but four lashes with a cat, as long as it doesn't have embedding at the tips, is still pretty unlikely to do serious damage. I'd assume there would be controls of some sort in place for this....

Really? I don't remember saying that, but, in this particular case, it doesn't bother me that much. I wouldn't advocate it as a punishment for playing hacky sack in public, but for a crime like this, it dosen't bother me that much, so long as it's not excessive and dosen't cause lasting injury.

Well, this didn't take very long to go off the rails. I thought this was going to be a discussion about the ethics of corporal punishment, and/or whether it was an appropriate part of the punishment for the offender in the OP. Not a forum to discuss BDSM.
BDSM is part of a wide range of sexual practises. It ain't for me, but if you want to do it with a willing partner, who am I to complain.
I'm not so sure how I stand on corporal punishment. Cruel and unusual, or short, sharp shock?
Of course the former Mrs. Lizard, being from the Isle of Man has a very firm view. As I understand her, the inhabitants were very upset when the European Court of Human Rights compelled them to abandon the birch.

See, but then, it would lose all sexual meaning for me, and would just turn into another episode of me taking out my pent-up rage against the world on some sap.
And after the last three mistrials, I'm not sure I'm ready to go down that road again. You know how much a good lawyer costs?

I just can't see how this is true. Eight lashes with a cat o'nine just isn't that big of a deal. Sure, it's going to sting quite a bit, perhaps break the skin and bleed a little. But deter criminal behavior? I don't think so.
I wish the cat o'nine was an option here in the States, for things like speeding tickets. I would be more than pleased to take a lickin' rather than pay $100 or go to traffic school. Of course, that may encourage me to speed more.
Edited to complete a thought.

A random person beating kids in a private, uncontrolled setting for unspecified crimes or violations is one thing. A trained person beating an adult for specified crimes in a controlled, public setting is another.

I would have to agree, nurple. It just seems that it's over so much quicker, and without any financial loss.

I dunno. I've seen alot of "macho" folk freak out when the toys appear. Not to mention the "shame and loss of volition factor". Feeling helpless is part of the punishment, and I'd think that would be a pretty affecting feeling for a rapist. Like I said, though, I'd go for more stokes...

Tell me about it. Right now I get to have my name in the paper every day because I'm late on property taxes. (Check has been sent). I'd almost prefer that they just put me in the stocks and forgive the debt. If I'm going to be publically humiliated, I'd rather not have to pay, too.

It's the "beating" part that bothers me in either case. A smack on the tush to keep an errant child out of danger is one thing, whipping or caning anyone, adult or child, is quite another.
I will make an exception for fish thwacking, though.
