Man, but I HATE working for a newspaper in Colorado.
Why can't I go somewhere like New Hampshire. Does anything happen there? No school shootings or professor hunts or mountain lion attacks or deserters pretending they died while hiking or creepy men claiming to strangle little girls, right?
Wherever that is, give me the name of your newspaper.....

Don't they have random killings of university professors up there in the Northeast?
I HATE it when cops cry. It bothers me worse than when kids cry... cops just aren't SUPPOSED to cry! It's in their contract of something!

I'd love to take that as a compliment that we don't have crime but unfortunately, we have our share.

Sorry no such luck. Cops are human and thus subject to all the same emotions. I have never cried at work. I have come home and cried to my wife about things that happened at work.
This whole event is terrible. My thoughts and prayers go out to those effected by this tragedy.

Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener identified the gunman as Duane Morrison, 53.

MSNBC interviewed a male student who initially resisted leaving when the gunman sent the boys out of the room. He didn't specifically say that he feared they'd be sexually assaulted, but I wonder if that was the vibe he was getting. Brave of him to try.

The 16-year-old student who told the Today Show this morning that he was in a Platte Canyon High School classroom when Duane Morrison took 6 students hostage yesterday made up the story, his mother said this afternoon.

Yup, that's the one, little bastard. I heard this morning that he made it up.

Yeah, isn't it nice that Mommy's apologizing for her little bastard: "He wants to say he’s sorry" (from the news story link).

CNN: The sheriff says the gunman who took six girls hostage in a Bailey, Colorado, classroom and killed one of them sent a suicide note.
So maybe we will find out what his reasons were...

To be fair, we don't know what's happening to him at home in the way of consequences. I have in the past apologized to outsiders for my daughter's behavior (nothing that weasely), while imposing serious consequences for it, and generally making her life miserable, at home.
If he were my kid, I'd be calling Today to see if they wanted to air his retraction statement.

If it were my kid, I would have done the same thing. This doesn't mean there wouldn't be hell to pay at home. But it doesn't make sense to through your kid to the media dogs. That wouldn't solve anything.

I wouldn't "throw him to the media dogs" but I think a public recanting and apology might be in order.

I guess a written apology wouldn't be dramatic enough.

How long do you think it will be before schools will start hiring security guards? I wish this school had some. That guy was in the parking lot and walking around on campus for almost an hour before the ordeal began, and a student says he was on campus asking about girls on his list the day before. But there was no one there to stop him.
What a nightmare.

My high school back in the 70s had a security guard. Of course back then most of his time was probably spent coping with the stoners and the vandals who thought kicking over lockers was an hilarious way to spend math class. I'm really surprised that, given the "way things are today" security guards aren't an automatic part of the high school experience.

As a parent, I think apologizing via the same medium he used to spread his lie is a competely appropriate consequence. A written apology would be, IMO, too easy. If you can face the camera to pretend you're a hero, you can face the camera to admit you lied.
