Anybody know if this is real? It seems to be, except that I know a person that lives near me that is a sex offender, and he doesn't show up.

It does seem to be accurate about other stuff though.

I would think that it's real. That information is supposed to be public record, isn't it?
Supposedly there is an offender on the next street over from me. Lovely.

ETA the word "it".

It missed the one that lives a few streets away from me. I found that one out through the Illinois Sex Offender Registry. If someone is really concerned/curious, I'd recommend just Googling (your state) sex offender registry to get the official site.

That's what I did. Family Watchdog appears to be sort of like an interactive version of the sex offender registry. Besides, I know Family Watchdog is real because I searched for someone whom I know is a sex offender and got their picture... and am tempted to post the picture because it is one of the best (unlikeliest?) mugshots I have ever seen.

Wow. I ran my old address in Los Angeles. Within 5 miles of my apartment there were 2137 registered offenders. I ran my current address in Texas with approximately the same size map -- 21 registered offenders. Now that's a big difference.

I tried that a little while ago, and the person I was looking for wasn't listed there either, although I know he has been convicted.

The only person actually very near my current address was a female, arrested for "aggravated prostitution." No picture of her available though, dammit.

No, that would be "Find Christian sex offenders in your area!"

Or at least, that's a close approximation of my daily spam. I alos keep getting "Long Pole" (reply to "MassivePole@LargeTool") and "President Klinton uses Voagra!"

This is odd... I entered the address I live at now (in New Jersey) and came up with 30 offenders nearby, with the closest one being 2 miles away.

Then, I type in my former address in Wisconsin, and up popped a list of ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-TWO offenders, almost all of them within a two mile radius of my old apartment!

Hey I'm not an expert or anything but when I typed in my address there is one that lives less then a mile from me, and that would make him less than a half-mile from the elementary school. I thought they had to live a certain distance away from schools, does anybody else know if that is true?

I like that site because it shows ALL sex offender not just level 3 (like VA & NY) they say they are the most likely to strike again but I think thats bullcrap I want to know where ALL of them are! The site also wants you to donate $5 to track when people move in or out of the neighborhood and to where. I'm all for civil confinement, they can NOT be rehabiliated and I wouldn't mind going to jail if someone hurt my son. Mothers instinct [Big Grin]

There was a sex offender who lived RIGHT NEXT DOOR(and still does) in the woods in a trailer next to my old elem. school out in the sticks...I called the police to ask and they said only if it's in their probation papers or a judge sets that...I guess not everyone. My mom wanted to hand out flyers but you can't violate their right to privacy [flame]

Good.

Yet again why does everyone feel that they have the right to act like the frickin' Punisher because someone who commited a crime and has already served their sentences is nearby?

Why is this man's right to privacy so distasteful to you?

Actually, yes, they can be rehabilitated. Burglars are more likely to re-offend than sex offenders. I've heard the "they can't be rehabilitated" bit quite often, but all the studies I've seen on the subject tell a different story. If you have more data to support this view, I'd be glad to see it.
