Ostentation, or hoax? You decide:

African rock python devours 10-year-old boy

Plenty of kids witnessed him being eaten, and one was named...but the dead boy wasn't named, because they don't know who he is...

I don't really see what the problem is here, if the kids were making it up there would be holes all over their statements, if the media are responsible for a horror story, well, no surprise there either.

The bottom line is, Rock Pythons are more than capable of swallowing a small child whole, The African Rock Python eats monkeys, pigs, deer, small apes, you name it - there is nothing unbelievable about this tale, even thogh it wouldn't surprise me to discover it's fabricated.

What I find even more sad is the fact that nobody knew who the child was.... [Frown]

The link is to a Canadian source but aside from town names, there is no real statement as to where this happened. If, as one "expert" said, the snake had just awoke from winter hibernation and was therefore hungry enough to eat a child, it did not happen in Canada (the snake could have been in Canada as a pet or an exhibit etc). Until I got involved with my current partner more than two years ago, my dream was to work with dangerous animals-ie gators, poisonous snakes etc.(after we met I had to switch to more mundane studies. SHe had this strange thing about not wanting me to get gored by an aligator...). Snakes are not stupid. Generally speaking, they won't attack something unless a-they feel threatened by it; b-they see it as a viable food source (ie, they know they could fit it into it's mouth-especially important in the case of certain poisonous snakes who don't produce loads of venom on a regular basis); c-they are very hungry or possibly old/sick and their senses are compromised. Do I think this could have happened? Sure why not. If the snake was big enough and the kid was small enough. Anacondas in South America have been seen to attack and kill small cows. Granted, anacondas are generally much bigger than boas. But I think it could have happened. With the lack of more info in the story though I would say that something smells funny and it ain't the snake.

It's hard to pick out from the article, but the incident seems to have taken place in Durban South Africa. I was able to find this article which seems to be an update on the search. I haven't been able to find any further information or an initial article.

Durban is in South Africa.

It looks like local news reports are taking it seriously, albeit with a shade of skepticism, especially as no child has yet been reported missing.
