regarding cell phones.

I was listening to the radiotrola this morning in my automatic driving machine, and I heard that people who use cell phones should put an unpopped popcorn kernel in their ears and when the popcorn pops, get off your phone.

What the hell is that all about?

Is it something to do with Radioactivity coming out of the phone, or the microwaves, or what?

Smooth Lou

I like extra butter, but I think I'll pass on the extra wax popcorn.

2 problems:

1) There is no way to pop a kernel of popcorn using a regular cellphone. It never generates enough heat of any type.

2) Anyone telling you to cram stuff into your ear shouldn't be listened to. You can seriously damage your eardrum by doing things like that. Heck, even Q-tips tell you not to stick them in your ear, cause it could injure you if you sput it in too far.

Wait a minute. . ., You have a radiotrola in your driving machine? My, aren't we the capitalist pig? I've heard of such extravagances in urban megalopoli but we'd never go for that type of thing around here. Curious though, when a tube goes out, is the access panel in the bonnet or boot?

Cellphones do give off emit microwaves, which as anyone who uses a microwave oven knows can in turn generate heat.

Still, I'd say what you heard was either an outright joke or an attempt to use irony to point out that cell phones' microwaves are too weak to damage your brain. (with heat anyway)

Unfortunately for many cell phone users, the brain damage already existed, but lacking a definitive cause, the poor sell phone gets the blame.

Cellphones do give off microwaves, theoretically not enough to do any damage to you. The newer 2.4 gigahertz cordless phones are also operating at the microwave frequency, which is why those phones [sometimes] get interference when nearby microwave ovens are in use.

Anecdotally [and we all know how Kathy B feels about that], I once worked with a guy [not a FOAF] that was on his cell phone several hours every day. He developed a brain tumor very close to his ear, the same ear he used while on the phone. That happened back when cell phones were a relatively new technology.

I fully realize that the cell phone was not neccessarily the cause of the tumor, but when it happens to someone you actually know, anecdotes seem to carry more weight.
