The actual price of the car is irrelevant. A little googling and research reveals:From www.bls.gov :
Avg. ins. cost per hour for auto manufacturing employees - 1.65
times 2080 hours, and you get just a little short of $3500 / year
Number of workers in US auto industry - 1,056,900 (1999)
from www.autointell.com:
Number of vehicles produced in US (1997) - 15,971,000
so, it's roughly 16 cars per employee, $3500 / 16 = $218.75
Not knowing the specifics of pricing with each type of vehicle, it's entirely possible that a substantial amount (1-2%?) of the car price is insurance. A lot of salaries and profit built in, too.
