While my size is 'unusually' large rather than uncommonly small, I have a bit of advice FWIW. Buy it on Ebay. No, this is not an advert. I must find clothing in 4x and 5x, with shirts tunic-length because of, well, a pendulous abdomen. I can't find these sizes in most clothing or department stores, and even the 'larger size' clothing stores like Fashion Bug have my sizes only sporadically. Ebay or equivalent websites have a vast array of clothing available in my size. You must take care to order by exact measurement rather than stated size, but with that caveat (also check for good feedback) I have had success finding everything from corsets to raincoats. Good Luck

KDS, I'm sorry that you took offense to my comment. I was a bit frustrated when I wrote it, I suppose, & it does seem a bit off now that I read it nice & calm. Forgive, if you can?
& to everyone else that wrote in with suggestions, thanks. The closest 5-7-9 store is about an hour away, but I'll probably trek over there soon.

My problem might be due to where I shop (I'm on a limited budget)...junior girls' sizes usually fit me fine, but I have trouble finding things that are age-appropriate. Dressing like a wanna-be rock star was fine when I was a teen up through my early 20s, but as I edge closer to 30 (yipes!) it's hard to find sophisticated, adult-looking clothing for a tall, skinny woman.
I don't follow fashion trends, so things might have changed. But the last time I went clothes shopping, everything in my size seemed designed for hookers, dance clubs, and rebellious teens wishing to pose as pseudo-punk rockers. Whenever I found something plain, it was either far too big and/or made me look frumpy. I was lucky enough several years ago to find two well-fitted plain t-shirts that were respectable enough for job interviews but didn't make me look like I was draped in a tent. They were about $5 each. I'd like to find more of those, but I haven't been able to.
I think most designers forget that tall, skinny women need businesswear too. We don't all want to walk around with lace, ruffles, sequins, and skulls emblazoned on see-through tank tops.

Can someone explain how junior sizes work, in relation to adult women sizes? I seem to be a junior in some clothes, but I have no idea what the numbers mean. Are they approximate ages?

My mother spoiled for me, when she would say 'If you only lose 5 pounds"
Then ex would add on to it, by telling me"you would be pretty if you lost weight.
All that did was dig my self esteem in a deeper hole.
Now I have 3 daughters, the oldest one in shaped like my X Mother-in-law, not even 5 feet tall and and on the heavier side. In her teen years shopping was like having a root canal. I knew better than to say her "If you lose 5 pounds..... yada yada yada. Basically if she found clothes that fit she was ecstatic.
Then came daughter #2 who had a nice shape, not skinny and not heavy, but her style and mine were not the same, and she didn't care what things cost, if she found of jeans in costing $50, in another store, if she found the exact same jeans in Walmart, she'd want the expensive pair. Not to mention the rest of her clothes, good thing for was, I had rules she had to follow, the shirts had cover the top of her pants, if tried on small,I would get her medium. I tried my best to keep her covered...LOL Now that she is married, some of her clothes make me shutter, at least I am not buying them, and her husband doesn't seem to mind.
Daughter #3, also not skinny, not heavy, she hasn't paid full price anything she buys, if its not on the clearance rack, she won't buy it.
My partner & I wear the same size, her mom buys us good clothes for Christmas, and her taste is impecable. My partner has to wear a uniform to work. I am on disabilty, I don't get dressed unless I going somewhere.

I have to share: I found the perfect jeans for me this weekend. They fit in length, size, waist...all of it. I'm 5'3" and about a size 12-14, have a 22 inch inseam, and am well-endowed in the thigh and butt area. I have a hell of a time finding pants at all that don't make me look like I'm squeezing two pigs in a sack, but these managed to fit perfectly. Where did I find these wonderful pants?
Steve and Barry's. They have very young-looking clothing that caters to the teenagers but manage to have basics like mid-rise jeans, oversized button-downs, v-neck t-shirts without patterns and stylish blazers. Nothing is more than $14.98. If you have one in your area, I suggest you go take a look. It's a gem of a place.

Nope. it goes sorta like 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 etc. however, the cut is normally different. Less room in hip and thigh and bust in the Junior sizes.
Edited to fix my sizing

I have this problem with women's stuff. I prefer long sleeves, due to having more hair on my arms than most women (though I trim and sometimes have bleached it when cross-dressing), but it's very hard to find sleeves long enough in most styles. Some years back, Lane Bryant had a "Tall Collection" and I still have a couple of very out-of-date dresses from it with long sleeves that actually FIT. If I had known then what I know now, I would have bought a lot more from them.
Still, I prefer short sleeves to 3/4 sleeves....those look awful on me.

Of course! We all say things in the heat of the moment (or the rant) that later turn out far from how we intended them, and I’m certainly no exception. You know, I could use a new pair of pants, myself. *Wanders off looking for the sales paper.*

Whenever you need a certain something at a good price, it's never available. It doesn't matter what size you are. The problem is that you need the pants, and the universe knows it, and rearranges things to put all the pants that fit you somewhere else.

Shopping for pants is a pain. I'm very petite. It's hard to find something that will fit, yet make me look like a woman in her 30's.
I did find some pants at Mervyn's size 4 petites. They don't sag at the crotch and they aren't low slung.

Which is my problem. I have a size 3 waist and size 9 hips. However, I'm barely a B cup on my good days.
I've noticed that in women's sizes (which I CANNOT wear), in order to be a "woman", you must have a large chest. Also, if you have big hips, you must also have a large waist. It's immensely frustrating, especially when I find something I'd really like to get in the women's department.
Some days I just get tired of digging through racks of skin-tight junior's clothes to find *one* decent shirt.

I don't know what you mean by "women's" sizes, but it may be that you are looking in the full figured department which are sized for people with ample boobage. My stores have Juniors, Misses, Petites, Women's, Petite Women's and then sometimes those sections are broken out by athletic, casual, formal and ultra formal. I shop mostly in Juniors, Misses and Petites.

I need around a 42 waist and 34 inseam, but almost anyplace I look, if you have a 42 waist, the longest inseam you can get is 32. You can get a 34 inseam with a 38 waist, but not bigger.
Fortunately, there are a few places I can buy online (Eddie Bauer, for instance) that will hem their pants at any length for you. (Well, I suppose not any length, but 33 or 34 inches is within their range.)
Also fortunately, I can wear shorts most of the year.
Take a look at Bill's KhakisYou can order online, or find them in a local store (more than likely). They are a bit pricey, but will last FOREVER. I also have good luck at JC Penny, and they are ALWAYS having a sale in the "Fat Man's" Department.

I have trouble getting any clothes to fit me, because I am basically the opposite of this so-called average woman that all clothes are cut to fit - over here, that means larger on the bottom than the top. Doesn't work for me; my hips are a size 12 while my waist is a size 14, so trousers that do up round my waist are baggy on the arse and trousers that fit my bum I can't do up. I've also got a 33" inside leg, which is an inch longer than most shops' long fitting (and I'm only 5'6"!) Up top, I am petite around my shoulders and ribcage but I have a 34G bust, so I simply cannot wear shirts and t-shirts have to be two sizes bigger than I would otherwise need just to fit over my boobage.
Which is when I do find something that fits me, I buy two or three of it, just to be on the safe side!

I'd like to hijack this rant with a question:
Why can't sexy have sleeves? I shopped and shopped for a party dress and it's either spaghetti straps, or surplice wraps, or shapeless shifts with granny jackets.
I know I'm fat, but I do have a waist. Can't I please have something pretty? I've found one dress that I like, online, and it's sold out.

I would like to say, for the record, that Bill's Khakis are the best casual pants I've ever worn in my life.

Lots of department stores have a "Women's" section in addition to juniors, misses, and petites. IIRC, the cut is kind of like Misses (and completely unlike Juniors), but in larger sizes.

Personally, I have unusually short legs (I was invited last year to join the Lollipop Guild). That is a major pain in buying off-the-rack trousers: plenty in my waist size, none with legs short enough so I don't walk on them.

Spam-and-Cookies, how about something like this? Some of Scala's "mother-of-the-bride" stuff is bleah, but there's a couple pretty ones on this page.
Edited to add: Sorry, that link goes to the first page. It's the fourth dress on the last page that I was referring to.
