Now I'm not one to normally post here but I had to vent about this....

My fraternity (whom shall remain namless) treasurer walked off, over the course of spring semester and this summer, at least $1500 that we know of and he fell off the face of the planet. I've been after the chapter since about a year and a half ago to tighten control on the finances but in the end it didn't help............ argh!!!!!!

Well this should prepare you for an excellent career in the government service....

Seriously. I can sympathise. Im sure there are plenty of people here who have spent years tightening regulations to prevent security breaches of financial irregularities to no avail.

by the way, yes I work in govt.

Well we have had problems in the past granted but this is the first time that we have had any real money to speak of, this pretty much left us broke.

You should also contact the college. They might have contact information or may be able to work with you to track him down. Was your Frat house on campus or off?

I don't know if they can, but check and see if the college will withhold his diploma until the money's paid back or something.

You need to contact the police and then the national organization, in that order.

Universities are notoriously reticient about reporting crimes, and I think many university police departments are actually arms of the institution's Public Affairs department.

Both the uni police and at least our section staff knows about this (section I'm pretty sure notified National, he's annoying but he knows his stuff) and the bank account was off campus so they (I'm an alumni now) are working with the bank. I should add that he even made a withdraw in Canada..... like we wouldn't notice that.

I don't understand why the accounts haven't been frozen.

Actually, frankly, I am surprised that the chapter did not have better failsafes on its account, like requiring two signatures to make withdrawals.

If they did require 2 sigs, I don't think that he would hesitate about forging the other sig. I know that some society accounts require both sigs to be made in front of the cashier for cash withdrawls but that does not usually apply for cheques paid to other people. As the treasurer he woulb generally be the only person with day-to-day access to the accounts, with only occasional oversight from other officers

The accounts are frozen, I edited my post and forgot why, it was to add that and I still forgot to add it:), and as for requiring two signatures I had been after the chapter for a good year or so to do just that, as the account sits (currently as far as I know) there are two people on the account but one or the other may sign checks.

So when did he make the withdrawal from Canada, before or after the account was frozen?

I was president of a club in college, wherein my treasurer was completely useless. So we fired him (and that in itself took effort!), then discovered he had made 55 personal phone calls on our club's billing number!

So I pressed campus judicial charges.

Oh if we could track him down we would. One of our advisor's suggested that we give him one chance to come clean and pay us back, but if he doesn't (as I suspect will happen) then we press formal charges with the courts and university as needed. I'll try and keep you updated as I get info.

My mum's 'friend' was the treasurer of the playgroup they worked in. People would give her the weekly fees and they'd go in her pocket to take to the bank. When they did charity days (rasing thousands of pounds), she'd take it to the bank and pay it in. She paid all her family's bills...

Except, she didn't. She didn't pay anything - ever. She hid bills and then hid the resulting court summonses (?) from her family, and paid bailiffs on the doorstep with money scrounged from wherever she could get it. When she was found out, she ran away.

These kinds of people have no conscience [flame]
