Lacking Biolabs, Trailers Carried Case for War
quote:
On May 29, 2003, 50 days after the fall of Baghdad, President Bush proclaimed a fresh victory for his administration in Iraq: Two small trailers captured by U.S. and Kurdish troops had turned out to be long-sought mobile "biological laboratories." He declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction."

The claim, repeated by top administration officials for months afterward, was hailed at the time as a vindication of the decision to go to war. But even as Bush spoke, U.S. intelligence officials possessed powerful evidence that it was not true.

A secret fact-finding mission to Iraq -- not made public until now -- had already concluded that the trailers had nothing to do with biological weapons. Leaders of the Pentagon-sponsored mission transmitted their unanimous findings to Washington in a field report on May 27, 2003, two days before the president's statement.

The three-page field report and a 122-page final report three weeks later were stamped "secret" and shelved. Meanwhile, for nearly a year, administration and intelligence officials continued to publicly assert that the trailers were weapons factories.

Ah but we didn't go to the war for WMD, we went to liberate the people of Iraq! If you quote Bush saying otherwise then clearly he was heard wrong or you misunderstood!

Makes you wonder what Bush has to full back on if it becomes unavoidably clear that Civil war has broken out in Iraq...

Now that you mention it, I do recall that. Seixon had a bee in his bonnet about the Hydrogen Production story. In a tiny, tiny way it is a pity he no longer posts here, as it would be amusing to watch him argue against the following

quote:
Navy Cmdr. Greg Hicks, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a written statement that the report from the expert team was sent to the DIA on May 27, 2003, but he said the findings were not vetted until over the summer. The statement did not say whether the information was immediately shared with the White House.

"This further analysis led to the conclusion of the ISG that the mobile units were impractical for biological agent production and almost certainly designed and built for the generation of hydrogen," Hicks' statement said.

I recall he felt competent to describe the Iraqi Survey Group's view as 'ridiculous.'
