Bah! See, I had no idea what to expect but the tone of the show turned me in an instant into a curmudgeonly old biddy!

In my first year at university, my room was underneath one of the college function rooms. All term I could hear rehearsals going on for some musical, with a bunch of people singing "This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius! The Age of Aquarius!" seemingly for hours at a time. By the end of it, I was so fed up that I never went to see the performance, since I assumed I'd heard it all anyway.

Then I discovered it was from this Hair thing, and found out why Hair was notorious. And at least one of the women who'd been in it was really attractive. I have no idea whether the cast stripped off or not, but I still regret not going along to find out...

(The room it was held in was called the Baring Room. That might have been what inspired them to put it on.)

I played in the orchestra for my college's production of Cabaret, and these costumes sound similar. By today's standards, they really aren't that revealing. The musical does contain a fair amount of innuendo, but high schoolers are no stranger to that.

And, 1958Fury, I can top that. A couple of ladies in front of us walked out of Les Miserables, after a certain song. I can only assume they thought it was encouraging prostitution . . . which means I can only assume that they have all the brains of little yellow squashes.

I don't understand people walking out of plays, or movies, or whatever. You paid for it! In fact, if you're seeing a professional performance, you probably paid A LOT for it! Do they seriously not care where their money goes?

After seeing those pictures I for one am totally offended by this. If someone can find a video of any of the rehearsals and send it to me, it may alleviate my offendedness when in it's correct context.

Anyone? Please?

On the plus side, it gave the pCMs something to do other than worry about gay marriage and they commie preverts.

These kids must be around 17-18 years old. It is not as if they wouldn't otherwise think about sex. Oh, and the costumes? Been to a beach recently? Much more revealing. Happily.

I am not familiar with this play however minors in sexually suggestive poses could be deemed child porn. Maybe not because its in performance and supposedly "Art" but if they are sexually suggestive poses any picture could be. As teen modeling sites were recently shut down and their owners arrested for the same thing. Teens in underwear/lingerie in suggestive poses.

I think that the "Is it art or is it porn" debate has been going on for a while now. The answer has to be that it depends on the cultural background. In stockholm, this would clearly be art. In Tehran, clearly porn. In Antelope Valley, the jury is still out.

I have seen child porn in the course of my work and I have to say that the images that I saw from that show were not child porn because (a) they were not of children. Yes, the performers are young but they are young adults by local standards and (b) they were not indecent.

Just my opinion

Me neither. We want pictures!

Yes, there's an abortion, a man with teh gay, old people having sex and even a song about a threesome!1!

My school did this when I was 14/15, the chorus were looking sultry in cages at the side of the stage, there were girls in lingerie...it was great!

I also posted them on my blog, and they're still up there. Which is strange because the image links point to WorldNetDaily's site. So in other words, they're still languishing on WND's servers somewhere.

I like to think that I'm the reason they pulled the pics. When I pointed out WND's hypocrisy on my blog, they all realized their foolish mistake and took the pictures down. But more likely, they got an angry lawyer letter from the college, which holds intellectual property rights to the pictures.

When I read this thread title, the first thing I said was "Well, duh! It's Cabaret, are they suposed to wear turtlenecks and overalls?"

My high school drama group ALMOST did Cabaret my senior year, but for some reason or another the idea got scratched. It wasn't because of the content of the show, though: My director had done the show at that school about 12 years earlier with no problems or complaints.

The pictures i was refferanceing were what were talked about in the link that started this thread. I was simply stateing that if the pictures the school officials said they had seen were really sexually suggestive it could be perceived as child porn. I would also question the teachers background here. I mean if any teacher got their students to dress solely in lingerie or underwear for any otherclass than drama the outcry would be enormous and the teacher would likely be put on leave if not fired.

I mean imagine a science teacher who was teaching anatomy haveing students disrobe as an expieriment to "study the human body"

Are you serious? Have you ever seen Cabaret? The costume the essence of the play! I doubt the teacher planned to stage the entire production so he could see some girls in nighties.
A science teacher would have no need to ask pupils to undress, because they would have one of those plastic body thingies.

One of our local high schools did a fantastic performance of Guys and Dolls a couple of years ago, and the dance numbers and costumes were extremely and unashamedly provacative. Most of the young women in the chorus obviously had a dance background, and felt quite comfortable performing in lingerie and bathing suits. They pulled it off well.

I went with a friend, though, and he said that he started to feel very uncomfortable when he realized that he found the dancers arousing, and had to remind himself that they were 16 and 17 years old.

ETA: I see the school district has pulled support from the production of Cabaret, and some people are calling for an investigation into the drama teacher, and whomever approved the production initially. Idiots.

Yes, that would be the right age range, but I didn't see it explicitly stated anywhere in the articles that all the kids were definitely 18, nor that any were definitely under 18.

18 being kind of a magic number in the U.S., I realize it's probably not that way in the U.K.

17 and 11 months? No risque displays for you, young lady! One month later? Perfectly ok to be a stripper in a bar that serves alcohol (as long as you don't drink the alcohol - gotta wait till 21 for that).

Well, it's not like they're positive references...

People tend to get a little too hung up on the outfits and sex in Caberet and forget that it's a play/movie/book with a serious concept behind it. The whole point is it's meant to show the decay of pretty much everything in Berlin before the second World War, with a dash of dramatic irony in that none of the main characters really take the Nazis seriously. Remove the Nazis *or* the sex (or other 'objestionable' things, like the closet-Jew, the Jewish girl represented as a gorilla in a Caberet number, the bisexual threesome, etc) from the picture and it's just meaningless.
