Oh God. I bet there will be about 10 female subscribers in the entire world. I don't see how any heterosexual guys could suspend their disbelief enough for this to interest them.

Actually...while there will be plenty of men-playing-women in these games (though the one with the built-in voice chat may discourage that), I expect there will be a significant number of female subscribers, too, based on my experience in chat rooms, on-line text-based role-playing games, and the like. I wouldn't hazard a guess at the ratio, but there might be more than you'd think. (And there are guys out there willing to suspend their disbelief, too.)

Considering that from what I've heard about the way the "SIMS Online" turned into a meat market, I suspect these games will have an audience.

I am one of those actually female players of everquest 2. I admit this idea is interesting and something I've thought about in the past. I will admit to engaging in a bit of flirtation and the occasional double entendre in eq...but then I fear that my battle-hardened barbarian companion in adventure may really be a 15 year old. And I wonder if an adults only everquest-type game (even a dedicated adults only server) might be a solution. But from reading the article these sex mmorpg's don't sound too appealing. I think they wouldn't be subtle enough. It's fun flirting and being suggestive, but I don't really want to play a game where the standard greeting is going to be "r u naked?"

So if you're up for some fun--Saura on Permafrost; Saura and Yaru on Venekor! [Wink]

I used to play EQ quite a bit, actually, and there are a lot of actual female online gamers. It's very hard to fake a woman's voice when you go to voice chat. [lol] It's not a geek-in-the-basement world anymore--there are actually girls out there!

Uhh... nobody is disputing that there are female gamers. I've played games that were more than 50% female. I was disputing that the hot and horny night elves who want to cyber with you are predominantly females. A game which is nothing but that isn't going to have as broad appeal as a normal game. Reading comprehension, people.

One of the growing number of female gamers, I could see myself buying into an online game that had adult content, but... one that's pretty much nothing but? Nah, I don't see myself getting into it, honestly. Not that I don't like my porn, mind you. [Wink]

All the online games have "leet" (elite) items that you quest and work for that make you a better player. I can just imagine the items in a sex-game.

"Look at me! I have a +4, gold-plated, mithril love glove!"

BTW, unless there is something else to do except sex-role-play-cyber, why would this be called a "game"?

Speaking as someone born male who generally plays a female online (it's the only way I can really feel like "myself"), how do you really know the real ratio? I've never been detected as male, but I have "come out" to other females before, who then turn around and reveal that they're really males too.

I host a server for NeverWinter Nights, and at one time I thought that about 10% of my players were female. Due to some recent revelations, I'm no longer so sure it's that high.

In the chat site I admin, I know for a fact that at least 10 of the regular "cybersexers" (there's about 30 regulars) are women/girls. I've met them. I'm betting at least 5 more of those are women. The rest are men/boys. I've had to step on some people quite hard about using the site as their own personal dating service, and the worst offenders are women.

Granted, that's only in my own personal experience, but I think there's probably going to be just as much appeal to gamer women as to gamer men.

My friend's cousin mentioned just the other day that he read an article about vibrating toys that could be plugged into the computer for cybering. The next time I see him I'll have to ask him if he still has it. If it existed. On one hand, I don't put much faith in things he says, but on the other it doesn't seem like something he'd think up on his own.

I don't know the ratio; however, aside from having several RL female friends who play online games (and in some cases, have been known to do...ah, adult-oriented roleplay -- and others who have not), there are other cases where the evidence is convincing enough (reports from other players who have met the person, people who are in RL "couples", people who've invited me to social events, etc.) that I'm reasonably certain some portion of the people claiming to be women, actually are. (Some of them might have very elaborate "covers" but I just don't think it's true of all of them.)

I usually (though not always) play female charcters in MMORPG's myself (for obvious reasons, given my own gender issues), but I generally avoid flirtatious behavior. As for revealing my actual gender to people I don't know, it seems that most gamers operate on a "don't ask, don't tell" policy -- I've very rarely actually been queried about it, and I generally don't offer to tell. (Some guys I know who play female characters are very upfront about their actual gender to anyone they chat with more than casually.) If any of my gaming friendships developed past the gaming point, things would be different, but generally they don't.

This is so stupid! The Sims has more realistic looking characters and you can have sex. I don't get why anyone would need to play a game that looks as stupid as the one in the article.

I'm not sure what the Sims online is like as far as sex goes...but if they still have sex as an option, then I think this game will bomb spectacularly.

Btw, I think there are plenty of women out there who have the sex drive and the inclination to play this sort of game and flirt and get into the whole online sex thing.

If any of my gaming friendships developed past the gaming point, things would be different, but generally they don't.

I've experienced just about every combination of events. I have a very good friend who I met while pretending to be female. I didn't actually say I was female when we "met", I just didn't correct his assumption, and eventually it was just too late. We played NeverWinter Nights together for over a year, and sent e-mails back and forth when we weren't playing. The entire time he thought I was female.

When I finally let the guilt overpower me, I told him the truth. He took it very well, and we're still good friends. So I got lucky there, but I'm much more careful now. I still play female, because that's the only way I feel comfortable. But if a correspondance goes any farther than a couple of e-mails, or any deeper than a "business" relationship, I tell them the truth right away.

Everyone I've told has been pretty much floored by the news, so apparently I'm fairly convincing. But nobody's been angry so far.

Anyway, "don't ask, don't tell" seems pretty common; people very rarely ask me straight out my RL gender. Nevertheless, the username I use when I play in my server (a different one from my DM/Admin persona), I consider female. So if a gender-related question does pop up, I answer as female. I feel a little guilty about it, but as far as I'm concerned it's either that or don't play at all. Besides, I've convinced myself that it's not really lying, since I believe I'm female at heart.

When an online friend revealed themself to be a male person playing a female character after a couple years, I felt a little bit hurt and quite a bit surprised. I had felt certain that I could spot a gender bender online, in fact, the girls chat group we were in (including the above person!) discussed ways we "knew".

I didn't lose respect or feelings of friendship towards them. I guess I mostly felt embarassed and wondered how much tmi information I had shared, that I would not have shared with a man.

I haven't heard from her/him in a few years, I hope she/he and her/his wife and child are doing well!

I was just wondering when a game like this would be coming out. It was only a matter of time...

As for girls on MMORPGs, you just gotta know they're there. I started playing WoW because I just had to find out what was so great about it that my husband could play for hours on end. He helped me set up a character and before I knew it, I was hooked. So, you gotta figure that there has to be wives/girlfriends out there who started playing because of their SOs.

Mournful, I've got to say that those sorts of 'test' questions are stupid. This is not meant to be a personal attack, it's just a bit of bitterness on my end, I think. Once I was on an IRC channel (back when I was still in college) and I was talking to a girl who didn't believe I was female. This dumbass asked me what size pantyhose I wore. I had no idea. She asked me what size my bra was and when I told her she didn't believe me. Then she asked what my measurements were. When I said I had no idea she went off on me telling me that I was a man pretending to be a woman and blah blah blah. I was so pissed off.

Just because a woman doesn't know those things that doesn't make her a man. It makes her a person who doesn't wear pantyhose that often and has no reason to know her measurements.

Why in the hell would someone know that anyway? Unless you're a model or a seamstress...

Don't pantyhose just come in small, medium, large, extra large, 2x, and so on? I wouldn't imagine that would be a hard question to fake. I'm not sure what size I wear (uh-oh!) but if someone asked me, I'd probably say large. Actually, I'd probably slap them for being fresh. Because I'm a lady, and I have class. [Big Grin]

And, so you'll all know: Link to pantyhose size page.

Pantyhose are sized with letters, "A" being the smallest, Q4 being the largest (in standard brands).

Perhaps nowadays you young hoseless whippersnappers need new questions. *grin*

In terms of the issue raised in regards to online gender in games, I tend to have both male & female characters.

The male characters tend to be projections of myself, in fact if the character customisation allows it I'll often make them look as close to me as I can get them. With the obvious exception that the characters tend to be fit & heavily muscled whereas I have all the physical grace of a dedicated couch potato.

The female characters are not projections of myself... the decision process behind creating a female persona is usually what I call the "Croft factor". Namely, that if I'm going to be spending hours staring at the back of the character I might as well have something with a nice ass for me to perv on [Big Grin]

In both cases I do not engage in any sort of behaviour that could even begin to be defined as flirting. I think once or twice I've been accused of being an asexual robot though [Razz]

I don't know what sex is like in the Sims either, but I think in that game all you can do is tell your character to have sex, and that's it. I'm guessing the game in the article gives you more control over the action, so to speak. Probably to a lot of people being able to decide what part of the other character to touch, or kiss, or what position they're in is more exciting than having the characters look realistic.

I had to think about my pantyhose size. My smartass answer would be either "Pantyhose is so OOOOLD. Airbrush is in, dahling." or "What size is your tampon and why is it lodged your ass?" But as far as measurements go, my answer would be, "I don't know, and I don't want to know until my belly doesn't stick out farther than my boobs." But then, I am a smartass, and I don't like nosy bitchy people.

You're not the only person I know who does this, but my problem is that I prefer Horde on World of Warcraft... How the hell do you configure a cow look like you? Or an Undead? LOL

But most players that have human 'toons do the same... It's like Greek Sex Gods and Goddess land online most of the time.

I'm a guy who's been called a girl plenty of times online before because it's either I'm a girl pretending to be a guy, or a guy taking the NFBSK because gay guys can't play video games... Yeah, right.

But erm... Sex in a video game? Why not just go and get the real thing?

Also, here's an interesting thought I just had, will you be using condoms/taking the pill in the game?

Not only do girls play online games,I know a few girls who play male characters, mostly to avoid perverts and also to do some change in their roleplaying.

I guess I can understand how some people will like having a place to do their dirty chats with sprites for visual to boot, but I don't get anything from watching computer graphics do it.In any case it will be interesting to see how this things catches on

The fun thing about standards is that they come in so many varieties.

World of Warcraft has fairly poor character appearance customization to begin with. The main thing you can control (besides hair, skin color, and facial expression) is your clothing, but most people end up wearing the best thing they can find, looking like circus freaks at mid levels and like clones at max level.

That having been said, the horde now has blood elves, who aren't as monsterous looking as the other horde races.

I still can't get the hang of video checkers, so I guess I'll give this one a pass.
