The industry's VIPs mingle at political galas and Super Bowl parties. Their product is available on cell phones, podcasts, and particularly the Internet there it's an attraction like no other, patronized by tens of millions of Americans.

It's pornography. And if you're a consumer, John Harmer thinks you're damaging your brain.

Considering that porn is about 2000 years old and has been found in many ancient cultures like Egypt and Greece, you would think evidence of harm would be found by now.

After reading the anti-porn activists' comments, I have to concede that my mother was right. I rolled my eyes too much and now they're stuck that way.

I found it especially hilarious that in marriages destroyed after infidelity, porn was identified as the source of the problem. Right, it wasn't NFBSKing other women that got you in trouble with the missus, it was LOOKING AT PICTURES OF NAKED LADIES. Oh, and a lot of people with sexual dysfunction look at porn? No shit. If I were a man who couldn't get it up, I'd rely on porn, too.

What really infuriates me is that these people aren't content to abstain from what they've decided is a harmful vice, or even to discourage its use among others. They want to ban porn. They want the government to slap their hands away because they can't resist the temptation themselves. My inner conservative (I keep her plied with beer and chocolate most of the time, but occasionally she rises up anyway) recoils at the notion of the morals police, telling us not to run with scissors or listen to naughty music "for our own good." Yeech. My perfectly functional relationship with porn is none of your goddamned business.

I'm not so sure. I find that last remark in the article pretty telling and all too believable. Men who like porn don't want their wives or daughters to get involved in porn - but guess what, all those women they jack off to in Penthouse are somebody's daugher and possibly somebody's wife.

Oh, I don't know. I think there are plenty of men who wouldn't mind being married to a porn star -- or certainly a nude model.

The daughters, on the other hand, you might be right about -- but that doesn't apply to just porn. As someone said, most fathers dread their teenage daughters meeting a guy who was like he was at their age....

Mainstream? Then why isn't it at blockbuster? Why do they use the vauge misdirection of "hustler hollywood", not to be confused with the megachain of hollywood video - or do they think their readers dim?

And superbowl parties? Anybody with a tv (chips and beer optional) can hold a superbowl party. What's such a big deal about that?

Now sexual activity (solo or with a partner) does elicit a biochemical pleasure response. And certainly porn can play a role in stimulis when one lacks a partner (or their parner is not in the mood), but this sort have thing has been going on for millenia, and society has grown and matured, rather than colapsed.

Though I do wonder if this article plays to a different sort of addiction - an addiction to outrage and self-rightiousness. The anger response also has a chemical element, and the adrenalline rush of self-rightiousness probably provides some sort of fix for some people, because talk-radio (aka political porn) couldn't survive objective logical analysis from your average 10th grades.

"Considering that porn is about 2000 years old"

It's a hell of a lot older than that... There have been dirty pictures as long as there have been humans... Even our early ancestors (before they evolved to be human) drew dirty pictures....

I wouldn't deny that porn is part of some people's overall sexual problems, but milk is part of some people's overall digestive problems and I don't see anyone trying to ban milk.

You know, some of these folks should be happy that men are looking at naked women. Its proof that they don't have 'teh gay'. Unless, of course, this is part of their evil plot to conceal tehir gayness, those craft homersexuals.

Possible TMI

My secret confession is that I encourage my SO to look at porn. It keeps him off my back! [lol] Ahem, not literally.

Really, what possible harm do they think pornography causes? Blurred vision? [Roll Eyes]

Off-topic question: Where did the idea that masturbation causes hairy palms come from? Isn't it more likely to remove any residual hair?

Well, this has been a random line of thought. I return you to your regularly scheduled posts.

Same here. When I'm not feeling well, or when I'm not in the mood, I encourage my SO to go use porn. He has a much higher libido than I do and I don't want him to feel deprived. And what harm does it do? He's still plenty ready for me when I want it, and that's all I ask. [Big Grin]

Soo sorry! I definitely read "SON" instead of "SO" and was momentarily horrified. [fish] That's for me.

My inner liberal says the same thing. We should be free to do what we want as long as we don't harm anyone who does not consent. They're over 18. Check. They agreed to be in the videos/pictures. Check. I see no problem.

And here I thought this was going to be "indie" porn stars balking at the big, mainstream porn industry, and how they're not in it for the art, man.

Seriously, though, I worry that we still have obscenity laws in the United States. How have they not been struck down? I've read the Supreme Court cases and I still don't understand why something that's merely offensive can be outlawed.
