I'm curious, what on Earth is wrong with this man? I've never seen anything like this before. I can't for the life of me think of why the "tubes" would wrap all the way around his shoulder. It's a facial (specifically a jaw) deformity, black and white picture. It's not terribly gruesome, but some might find it rather offensive. I'm going to link the images from my Photobucket account, because the original site (which you'll see on the watermark) is rather vulgar. Not that I frequent such a site
Any information would be appreciated. Perhaps I'm too inquisitive about these things.

My memory is not good on this, but I'm sure I've seen something similar. IIRC it was an experimental reconstructive surgery procedure for injured troops in WWI. Some skin was formed into tubes stretched around the face, and left to grow for a few months . Then the tissue was used for grafting.

I agree wirh Eddylizard, they are trying to get some usable skin. Look at the chest in the second picture, and you'll see a clear line between damaged/good skin.
They may also be seriously into Cthulhu worship. "Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fthagn!" and all that stuff.

Hrm, shows how little I know about the field of plastic surgery. Quite an innovative idea. Thank you very much Eddy and Troberg. I can sleep well tonight/this morning.

Wow. I find those pictures pretty inspiring. Another case of truth being so much stranger than fiction.

Cosmetic surgery is not something you just dump something on, it's not a big truck. It's . . .

Yeah, it wasn't received as well as I had hoped. More info here http://seriesoftubes.net/ But that's a story for another thread.

Don't sweat it Western. We your former colonial oppresors are half the time too busy noticing the stupidity of our own politicians to notice the stupidity of yours.

I looked at the photos before reading the thread, and my first thought was "early experimental skin graft". I was right!

Amazing how well they were able to mend that man's face after suffering such a horrible injury. I'm very impressed that they were capable of such a vast reconstruction back in the twenties. Some of the cases on that website that DeathLord posted are quite heart-wrenching.

Thanks for your input and the link DeathLord. And I second what Syllavus said.

I was inspired before, but seeing the end result has just blown me away. Inspired not only by the innovation and care taken to rebuild this man's face, but by the look in his eyes that seems to say "Yeah? So what? I'm dealing with it."
I hope my admiration doesn't come across as glurge. Posts: 1157 | From: Westcountry UK "It's Bootiful" | Registered: Jul 2005

Not glurgy at all Neffti, I know exactly what you mean. I would love to know what became of this man, and how the rest of his life was spent. It's a shame that the exhibit that DeathLord posted, which consists of works of sculptural art inspired by these men, won't be touring museums in the US. I'd love to see it.

My daughter had something similar done to her to make skin grafts. Instead of tubes, they used round or oblong shaped implants and gradually stretched them out with saline to make her skin grow. It's been used on breast cancer and burn patients for a couple decades now. My daughter had it done to remove a LARGE mole on her back. (It covered from shoulder blades to butt crack and side to side. Nasty lookin' thing, really.) Technology is amazing!

It's really amazing when you think that this was before penecillin. Of course, doctors just washing their instruments and hands between patients (an innovation just prior to WWI) saved a lot of suffering and death. Not to mention the use of carbolic acid to prevent infection. In fact, one of the reasons there were such innovations in plastic surgery after WWI was that sanitation and blood transfusion had people surviving injuries that had been fatal in previous wars.
There were also a lot of innovations in prostheses after WWI for the same reason-- also the development of special, formalized training for Seeing Eye Dogs for the Blind.
