I've found that putting something sugary in soda makes it fizz. I think this is real because A) lots of sugar at once=lots of fizz B)not much empty space in the bottle so fizz has nowhere to go but up. From the title I thought this would be something similar to the Pop Rocks story, so I think I'll share something with everyone (I know, you're all so excited). This also ties in to my experience with sugar=fizz, by the way.
When I was in 5th grade my friend and I heard the Pop Rocks and soda thing and didn't believe it so we did an experiment. I poured a large packet of Pop Rocks into my mouth and then took a big swig of Pepsi. There was so much fizz bubbling up I couldn't swallow and the fizz shot out my mouth and nose. My friend freaked out, thinking the legend was true

Nice!
That video was hilarious! Makes me want to try it. Maybe I can get my brother to do it...

Here's the translated text from the Dutch site, according to WorldLingo:
quote: Fonteinen find you everywhere, in all half-measures and sometimes in all colours. There has seen everyone, however, already once one and has looked at to the aqueous bacon hoist. Thanks to how? This way!everyone can knock together now his own fontein in each other...if you are at least not frightened nat become.
Video thus you make muntjesfontein Herman and Dana experiment thus you give muntjesfonteinconcert This way! These muntjesfontein spout cola approximately 4 à 5 meters in air. This test does outdoors if you want make within no sticky smeerboel. This needs you:
Is it just me, or does "aqueous bacon hoist" sound like some kind of bizarre euphemism?

^^^ Maybe I should give translating a try, 'cause that didn't make much sense.
quote:You can find fountains everywhere, in all sizes, and sometimes in all colors. Everyone has seen one and enjoyed the watery spectacle. Thanks to Hoe?Zo! everyone can make their own fountain...if you're not afraid to get wet.
This mintfountain will launch soda up in to the air at a height of 4 to 5 meters. Do this experiment outside if you don't want to get everything sticky. You need: * a bottle of Coke Light [think it works with any soda though] * one and a half roll of mints * a plastic or glass tube measuring around 20cm * a raincoat
Put the mints into the tube. Make sure the tube is wide enough that the mints can slide out easily. If you don't have a plastic or glass tube, you can use a rolled-up piece of paper to hold the mints. Place the bottle of Coke on a table and unscrew the top. Place the tube with the mints carefully above the opening, stopping the mints from falling out with your thumb. When you're ready, remove your thumb, and let the mints slide into the bottle. When the last mint has dropped, quickly remove your hand from the bottle. The coke will launch up about 4 to 5 meters and will make a gorgeous fountain.

According to wikipedia, "Mentos contain gum arabic, which can be used to increase fizzing in carbonated beverages. This is demonstrated in the famous mentos and coke experiment."

You're comment reminded me of what happens when you make a root beer float...tons of fizzing.
And your story....dude! Cool!

heh, that reminds me of something that happened when I was in high school. A friend of mine would always bring a 2 liter of soda to drink every day. one day the rest of us were messing around, and we somehow got the idea to put lots of sugar into his soda and shake it a tiny bit to mix it up (no idea why, but somehow we thought it would be funny.) so one of the guys pours the sugar into the bottle, slowly. there's a bit of fizzing but nothing too major (there was only like 2 inches left at the bottom of the bottle.) so he takes the bottle to try to mix the sugar in, gives it one tiny shake...
KABOOM!!!!
the soda shot out several tables over, and covered everyone in the area. all that from a small amount of soda, a couple of sugar packets, and one tiny shake.

The Belgian site basically says that the Mentoses work like this because the gum arabic acts like a soap. That would suggest that the fountain would be even cooler if you used washing powder instead of mentos. Anyone try this? Otherwise I'll just have to sacrifice a bottle of coke for the sake of science.

Okay, that starts to make sense. Soap acts as a surfactant meaning the surface tension is reduced. I guess that would make the liquid more likey to splatter.
However, I hadn't though of gum arabic as a surfactant. Form a painting perspective why did I have to go and by the bottle of ox gall as well as the gum arabic.
I'm not fond of either Mentos or Coke so no big sacrifice for me. This could be a fun experiment to do while babysitting my nephews this evening. Won't my sister love that.

I did something similar, unintentionally, when I was about 14. I had a bottle of Jolt and a pack of Gobstoppers. I dropped a few in the bottle of Jolt, thinking it would add extra sugar and make the flavor change. I put the top back on the bottle.
About ten minutes later I opened the bottle to take a swig and a huge gush of foamy soda went all over the place. Made a big mess. Bummed me out because it was a waste of Jolt AND Gobstoppers.
Still, makes sense that it would also happen with other soda/candy combinations.

It works way better with diet pop than regular. I'm guessing it has something to do with the sorbitol/nutrasweet/whateverotherunhealthychemicalcrap that's in it that's not in regular pop.

Or it could be the lack of sugar. Plain soda water seems alot more explosive than cola. What happens if you put mentos in that, I wonder.

My kids and I did that last summer. It was awesome. It works best if the carbonated water is very cold, and the mentos (8 at our last go) get dropped in at once.
We had a spout about 10 feet high coming from the bottle.

This is great! I knew it had to be real, but i still told all of my friends "Nah. It wont work" just so we could do it. So we went and bought diet coke and mentos mixed fruit (in the new little boxes) and we did it in a parking lot. only about 7 fell in and we had a fountain 7+ feet high! I kept doing it again and again! Its great!!!

I asked my chem teacher about it, and he said that mentos is basically sugar crystals in a casing. So you pour the mentos in, and the casing disintegrates, and so the liquid has more surface area to hold onto, so there is a large reaction.

Reminds me of something that happend last summer. I was driving down the road with my son, and stopped for snacks. He chose pixie sticks and the C2 coke (you know, the one with half the carbs)
Well, as I'm driving down the road, I hear this huge FWOOSH! He had dumped a pixie stick in his pop, which resulted in the pop being sprayed all over the inside of my car.
Of course, I couldn't be mad at him - he had no idea it would happen, and the look on his face was histerical. After he had a couple of minutes to process what had happened he said "Cool! Can I do that again??"
