Hmm, I've never heard the idea that eggs are high in fat. And where did this one come from?
quote:Myth: Eggs take too long to cook.
Whoever thought that?
quote:Fact: Recent research indicates it takes the average Canadian approximately 5 minutes to cook eggs, though you can cook an egg in the microwave in less than one minute. Microwave egg cookers are available at www.eggs.ca, or you can simply crack the egg in a microwaveable bowl, pierce the yolk and white several times, cover the dish with a microwave-safe plastic-wrap and cook on high for 45 seconds.
... So the implication is that there are people who thing anything more than 45 seconds to cook is "too long"? Weird.
That almost seems like it was written by the egg marketing board!
Myth: Eggs are nasty Fact: Eggs are actually quite delicious

It take 5 minutes in Jo'berg, but that's taking into account the altitude and the fact that soft boiled is the desired result.
I love dippy eggs.
Homer Simpson: Stonecutters, eh? How down I join?
Lenny: There are only two ways to gain membership. Be the son of a Stonecutter. Or save the life of a Stonecutter.
[Homer grabs an egg salad sandwich out of Lenny's hand, throws it on the ground and stomps on it.]
Homer Simpson: I saved your life. That egg sandwich could'a killed you by cholesterol.
Lenny: Pfft. Forget it Homer. While it has been established that eggs contain cholesterol, it has not yet been proven conclusively that they actually raise the level of serum cholesterol in the human bloodstream.
Homer Simpson: So one of those Egg Council creeps got to you too, huh?

I'm with Richard on this one. I have never heard of any of these 'myths'. I think it was a journalist trying to make a very boring article sound interesting. It is and he didn't.

This one I had heard before, no idea where, but I did vaguely have in the back of my mind that eggs were a relatively high fat food, probably from all these diets I've seen where you're only supposed to eat the white as the yolk is too fattening .
quote:Myth: Egg whites are the best source of protein in the egg.
I'd always heard that the best source of protein was the yolk.
quote:Myth: Eating eggs will increase the risk of heart disease.
nope. never heard this one before
quote:Myth: Seniors should decrease consumption of eggs as they age.
where are they finding these myths??
quote:Myth: Eggs take too long to cook.
I guess that depends on how long is too long, but I always thought that those sand filled egg timers were made for 3 minutes as that's how long it should take to boil and egg....
I'm with Richard and Andrew, I think the journalist was short of things to write about so just decided to invent some 'myths'
Scout.

Most of the calories in eggs come from fat. That is probably where the talk that they are high in fat came from. ~7% fat can be high depending on what you're doing with it. It's close to double that of whole milk. But you're probably not going to be drinking glasses of eggs unless you're Rocky.

Interesting... all these myths that UK snopesters have never heard were fairly common in the US in the recent past. 1950s: Eggs are good! Eggs make you strong! Eat lots! 1980s: Eggs are bad! High fat! High cholesterol! Don't eat! 1990s: Well, if you must, just eat the whites! We'll even color them and add flavoring to make it taste like the yolk and sell them in waxed cardboard containers! 2000s: Eggs are fine, get over it... And, yes, the Egg Council did publish lists like the one in the OP, and even had an "incredible, edible egg" TV ad campaign that ran during afternoon cartoons to try to counteract the declining sales brought on by the low-fat/low-cholesterol push of the '80s.

I've never heard of any of these myths. I think the writer invented them.

I didn't mention it in my post, but I am a UK-er(?) that has heard the myths of the fat, protein in the white, and the heart disease ones. They have all been superceeded by what we've been told since, but as a kid these were the things I was told. As for the seniors one, we were told never to teach our Grandma to suck eggs.

Eggs take too long to cook? How ridiculous. Eggs are a big part of my diet because they are so fast and easy to cook.
