now as a lot of people know, when you mix mentos candy and soda it makes a bomb out of soda. if someone drank soda and then ate mentos, would they blow up like the pop rocks and soda myth?

Well, since you seem so interested in this outcome, go for it. Remember, this is for science. Isn't your life worth that?

Only if the gas expands far faster than one can belch -- and even then, it would have to be a lot of gas to rupture the stomach (or the stomach would already have to be heavily stretched with a big meal or lots of liquid already). The Mythbusters were able to burst a pig's stomach (already removed from the pig) only by clamping such both the esophagus and the, er, other exit.

See, the thing about having a working digestive system is that there are means by which you can expel gases. Some of which can be humorous in their own right, as you'll see if you ever get into a champagne-chugging contest.

But, yeah... if you want to explode (or make somebody else explode) you're going to need a lot of gas, as Logoboros already said. I just had to mention champagne-chugging because of my eventful night. [Big Grin]

My housemate is a teacher and decided to do this experiment at an open day, so a few weeks ago we were out practising in the garden with lots of diet coke and mentoes (or their cheapo, easier to find equivilant)

It sort of worked in the end. Nowhere near as good as this though!

However, as I understand it, it's to do with the sudden addition of the mints and their combined surface area. It was quite difficult to do with a full bottle of coke and 5 mentos being dunked in all at once (the fist few attempts were less than impressive), so I doubt once the coke has been drunk, mixed with everythinng in your stomach, and some chewed up mentos work their way down there, anything would happen at all.

Not to mention the sheer amount of full mentos you'd have to swallow in order for this experiment to work...
I don't think this experiment would possibly work. The stomach acid would probably bungle the experiment. I'll think more of how this won't work when I'm more awake, but I did perform the coke-and-mentos experiment (the original, not this stomach one) and would recommend it to any wannabe mythbuster [Wink]
