This is something Mr. LyndaD's stepmom insists she got in an e-mail. She says that iceberg lettuce isn't a plant, but is a 'manmade petroleum byproduct'. I've never heard this particular UL and can't find any info. I know its nut true, but without evidnence can't convince her. Don't suggest showing her a field of lettuce, she's seen them growing in the fields. She told me they 'stick them out in the field for a few days so people think they were growing them, and then pack them in boxes.' Anybody ever heard this before?

Actually grow some for her. It's not that hard, we did it for years. The only downside is the ugly black beetles that you have to wash out of the middle when you pick them. Man I hated those things.

Hmmm, sounds like she's confusing lettuce with the Cabbage Patch Kids. Your MIL must not realize that lettuce 'bolts' ie, grows small flowers and sets seeds once the weather heats up.

Thanks for all the info, and the link back to the previous discussion. According to mil, the iceburg lettuce seeds you buy in a little packet and grow in your garden are different from the mass-produced iceburg lettuce you buy in the grocery store. She also believes aspartame is responsible for her MS, saccharine causes cancer, and injecting shark embryo cells in Mr. LyndaD will cure his fibromyalgia.

OT, but a lot of shit causes cancer in lab rats. They didn't remove it from the market at all, much less as long as 30 years ago. It is being replaced on a marketing basis by 'better' tasting sweetners.
ETA: On second reading this may have sounded snarky, but I don't mean it that way.

You're confusing saccharine with cyclamates. Cyclamates were banned and saccharine was used until aspartame came along.
The effect of both cyclamates and saccharine is still being debated, and the ban did not make a lot of sense. It was evidently a mixture of the two sweeteners that appeared to cause the cancer, yet only cyclamates were taken off the market. Also, the levels of artificial sweetner fed to the rats was such that a human would have drowned in Fresca long before he got cancer.
For these and other reasons of sloppy science, cyclamates have been allowed outside the US.

Just because something causes cancer in rats doesn't mean it'll cause cancer in humans. Besides when they are testing that kind of things on rats they give them like MASSIVE doses of it...quantities that we probably wouldn't injest in a life time.
