Comment: A coworker was telling me a tale of driving in Mexico. He said that while he was a passenger in a car in Mexico city, the driver warned him not to put his arm out the window because if the local bandits see any jewelry, that they'll chop of your arm or fingers to try and take it.

Bandits walk around in broad daylight with machetes and knives at the ready? What part of Mexico were they driving in?

Probably in the area around El Rumero, or Legenda Urbana.

Was he driving in Mexico in the 1800s?? Im sorry but who uses the word bandits (outside of a western movie)??

But seriously, it is very unsafe in Mexico City. You shouldn't even wear jewelry. Not because you will get your hand cut off, but because you will get mugged. And if you are in a car, someone can just open the door and jump in and kidnap you or if they can;t get in, they could just shoot you through the window and take the jewelry.

Of course, there are areas in Mexico City that aren't as unsafe but as a general rule it is better to not take anything of value with you.

From my experience in Mexico City, you should not put your arm or hand out of the window of any car.

It is not the bandits that will remove it, it is the surrounding traffic!

(NEVER drive yourself in Mexico City! Always hire someone to drive you)
