My mum is using office XP on her laptop, but the "Edit" menu has disappeared at some point, and shes only now got around to asking about it. Its been gone for months apparently. Just to be clear, its the edit menu (The one thats supposed to be in between "File" and "View"), not the edit toolbar. The edit toolbar is still there.

I tried hitting "Alt" and "E", as that normally drops down the menu, in case it was still there but just unseen, but nothing doing. I checked out the other parts of Office, and Excel still has its "Edit" menu intact.

I'm frankly stumped. Anyone out there have any idea how to fix this short of a reinstall?

Well I've figured out how to remove the menus, but not to put them back yet.

A co-worker had this happen in either Windows 98 or ME. We closed Word, and deleted the normal.dot file (that's .dot, not .doc). That fixed the problem.

I'm not sure if you can do this in XP.

Wow!!! OK! That took some figuring...

Go to Tools -> Customize.

Select the "Commands" tab.

Scroll down the Categories: section and select "Built-in Menus". The second to last item in the list.

Select the "Edit" menu form the "Commands" box and drag it to the desired position on the menu/tool bars.

I only have 2003 and I can't find a way to remove the edit menu but I would bet it can be brought back by going into view>toolbars somehow. I hope that helps.
