Probably stupid but if anyone could help...

I have a US Robotics 9600 router/gateway. Today I bit the bullet and updated the firmware. I have two wintel machines and an Xbox 360 hooked up to it. One PC is connected wirelessly.

Up to now I have been using WEP, flawed I know, but the only option available under the old firmware. Plus I don't think my neighbourhood is swarming with wardrivers. That and MAC filtering suited me fine.

The new firmware will only allow WPA under the security options, and frankly I am out of my depth.

The options are:

Network Authentication

Disabled
802.1X
WPA
WPA-PSK

WPA Group Rekey Interval: Default 0 (Zero) but I can type in any value I choose.

RADIUS Server IP Address: 0.0.0.0. Again I can type in any valid IP address.

RADIUS Port: 1812. Enter a number.

RADIUS Key: Is blank. Enter a number.

Data Encryption: Choice of TKIP or AES.

I would be grateful if anyone could explain what I should set these fields to. Thanks.

For home use you would generally use WPA-PSK, it provides the key internally, no authentication server is required. Thus, the RADIUS settings are not applicable. The rekey interval is how often the key is changed (in seconds). I really don't know what a good interval is, but the shorter the more secure (ETA: I'm seeing sites say that short rekey intervals are not as necessary with WPA-PSK. I'm seeing recommendations of anywhere from 1800-3600 (30min-1hour). Leaving it blank or zero means it will not periodically rekey. For encryption TKIP is more standard, but you can try AES and if it works between your router and all your devices then you can use that.

Many thanks for your explanation Kev, much appreciated.

ETA I've entered the settings you suggested, and my little network is working well.
