I was taking notes on my laptop today, and noticed something weird in Word. For some reason, there are now gray right-angled lines boxing out the corners- where the margins are. I've never seen it before, and have no clue how to turn this off. Any ideas?

You seem to be in Print Layout mode. You can change this setting under the View menu. I actually prefer working in this mode, but if you like you can set it back to normal.

I'm always in Print mode, though... never seen this before, or on my PC with the same settings.

That doesn't seem like Print Layout to me, I use that by preference, also, and there aren't any right-angled lines, just the gray around the "page". Unfortunately, I have no idea what it is. You didn't accidentally apply a page border did you?

Are they "text boundaries"?

Go into tools, options and on teh view tab there are tick boxes to show various things, one of which is text boundaries.

They appear as you describe on my computer.

Cheers

Just tried that, and those aren't either page borders or text boundaries.

Maybe if I explained it better...

I have a page, with 1" margins all around. In each corner, where the margins intersect, there is a small right-angled gray bit. I can't figure out why.

So, basically, you have the little markers that show where the text boundaries intersect, but you don't actually have the text boundaries showing.

Congratulations, Casey, I can't reproduce the effect.

I've played with it a lot, and can't figure it out. I seem to remember that the corners showed up after I had to update Word one day, and now I also have the Asian characters option.

"Well, this is nonsensical..." is a poor choice for a topic name. Please select topic names that are more reflective of subject matter.
