I have a bunch of Microsoft updates that I need to install, but I have a problem- there's something preventing me from doing it.

Now, I kind of know what the problem is. There's something in the services.msc part of my computer that I have to go and start it myself. But I've forgotten which action it is that I have to start.

Ideas?

Not really, sorry. It depends on which of the services was switched off.

Does it not update if you go directly to the MS website rather than updating via auto-update?

You need to have Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), Automatic Updates, and Event Log running and set to Automatic.

Go to start, control panel, select "Administrative Tools". Select "Services". Find "Background Intelligent Transfer Services", it about the 5th one or so. Right click and select "Properties".

Toward the middle, where it says "Startup Type", using the drop down menu, select "Automatic". Then select Apply and close.

Do the same with the other two and reboot. You should be all set.
