Hello all,

I have had my laptop computer for a good two years now, but I have recently been having a serious issue with it. The power cord will go in but it is hard to get it to despense power, sometimes you have tostick it in just the right way for it to work. I took it into a shop and the guy there said that is a probolem with the pin inside the computer's port, and that it would be more affordable to buy a new computer all togather than to get it fixed. It's become such a probolem that I can't use that computer any more because my battery is dead, and it needs to be plugged in to run. I was just wondering if anybody else has had this problem.

I had that problem with my thinkpad: First the cable had to be plugged in at a certain angle, then it wouldn't work at all. I don't know how expensive repairs are because the laptop was still under warranty when it happened, but it took the repair guy about 30 minutes to replace the contact that was causing the problem -- so I'm not so sure if getting a new computer really is the best option.

The Repair Man told me it would be about $900 because I would need to replace the motherboard. I would just as soon go buy a new one for $1200 then spend so much getting my old one repaired.

Eek. Yeah, if that part is part of the motherboard and it's that expensive, it makes sense.

In my case it was just a worn-off contact which could be replaced on its own. [Frown]

Several possible solutions:

* Depending on the kind of plug, it might be possible to adjust the contact with a small pair of pliers or a bent needle.

* Find a repair man that knows how to solder. It's still possible to replace a contact, but no authorized dealer will do it. You might be able to pursuade a non-affiliated TV repairman to do it.

If that fails, get a new machine. Don't bother to fix it.

Even better solution (for many reasons), which I think I should have thought of before:

Get a docking station for it (don't worry, no puppies will be hurt)!

Power plugs into the docking station (and you usually get a new power adapter with it), then the docking station connects to the computer with another connector, which (and this is the good bit) is not the same connector as the ordinary power connector. This also makes it simpler if you have other stuff plugged into it, such as network, real keyboards and so on.

A docking station is pretty cheap, probably $200 or so.

Simple, neat and practical! Now tell me, who is the king of home electronics?

TM- What is the brand and model of the laptop? I have some resources, and can usually get the exploded view of a machine (or at least a parts sheet). It should be a simple matter to verify that the power plug is actually a part of the motherboard (they usually are not, and simply plug into the board).

Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?
