ETA: Duh. Maybe because there are a lot of places that aren't peaceful. Anyway, it's an intriguing image.

I don't know if it adds anything but the title of it is "Peace on Earth" and the lights are in color on the cartoonist's site.

Hmmm.. Could it have anything to do with that woman and her Peace Sign ornament that the home owner's assosiation wanted to take down? As well as the lack of Peace on Earth in reality. Sort of like we need to mind our house first before we go and clean/rescue other people's.

I don't know about you guys, but when one light goes out in my Christmas lights goes out, the whole strand goes.
Clearly he's suggesting that we start wiring out christmas lights of freedom in parallel, so we can at least light enough bulbs to create a pentagram if you connect the dots (kinda). If you can't have peace, might as well have satanism! Or geometry.

Perhaps the fact that some of the lights are lit is meant as a sign of hope, and the burned-out lights are commentary of what a lousy job the US government has done of promoting peace in the past few years. (I'm drawing that conclusion from it being an American newspaper, not out of any sense of America-is-always-wrong.)

I think it's a commentary on the lack of peace in the world. If everything was sunshine and roses right now the sign would be completely lit up.

I think it was inspired by Sir Edward Grey's famous line in the run up to WWI "The lights are going out all over Europe..." Except that the message in the cartoon refers to the whole world - the lights of peace are going out worldwide.

I didn't think of that particular line, but that was what I believed the cartoon meant. I think you nailed it with the quote. It brought tears to my eyes.

No no no! It's saying that despite the fact that some of the lights have burnt out, God has defied physics and miraculously kept some of the lights burning. Take that, science!

I don't know about you guys, but most of our Christmas lights in the 21st Century have a shunt that permits current to flow through the strand if a bulb blows.
quote:Christmas tree lights are definitely wired in series. But each bulb contains a shunt resistor in parallel with the filament, barely visible as a fine wire wrapped around the base of the metal posts that support the filament within the bulb. This extra wire allows current to bypass a burned out bulb and keep the rest going.
Take that God!

Reminds me slightly of the song "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" except for the political cartoon doesn't seem to offer any hope that peace will prevail.
I heard the bells on Christmas Day Thier old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet the words repeat Of peace on earth, goodwill to men.
I thought as now this day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rung so long unbroken song Of peave on earth, goodwill to men.
And in despair I bowed my hear; "There is no peace on earth," I said, "For hate is strong and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men."
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail With peace on earth, goodwill to men."

I'm sure Jack Chick would tell you that it only works because God sends his angels to sit in each bulb and carry the electrons across the gap. That's apparently how he thinks atomic nuclei hold together, after all (protons repel each other, therefore God exists, or something).

I'm in shock.

That was my interpretation as well -- that the prospects for peace are dimming around the world.
I saw it as the opposite -- that despite the problems in the world, there are a few bright spots of peace.
Admittedly, I'm an optimist, so your version is probably closer to the intent of the artist.

I didn't see anyone else state this, but the positioning of the lit bulbs makes me think of a circle with a line acoss it...kinda like a No Smoking sign. Well, except this is a No Peace sign.

WRONG! Those lights are clearly C7 bulbs. They are 115 volts AC, once the most common Christmas tree bulb in 60's and 70's, and they are wired in parallel. One burning out has no impact to any other bulb, unlike the mini-bulbs now used as the standard, where they are designed for 3 or 5 volts and several have to be in series to connect to 115 VAC. The reason for C7 fall from the top position in the Christmas bulb favorites is the fact it burns 7 watts per bulb, which got it hot enough to melt plastic trees.
C7 are still around, as well as the larger C9 bulbs.
As far as the cartoon, I'm in the camp thinking it represents a lack of peace on earth.

I think you're right. I was trying to figure out what the lit light pattern represented but apparenly I was overthinking it. It is just a circle with a line through it.
