Of course the c-section "emergency" was entirely about the child tax credit, right?
It wouldn't be anything to do with the fact that 9 months prior to December happens to be around the start of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere?
All I know is that March/April births are popular in my family, which means conception tends to happen in the middle of Winter. Apparently there isn't much else to do around here come Winter...

I'll never tell...
I used to "talk" to my kid when she was still in the womb. One of my standard "conversations" was about the fact that I wished she could come in December so that Daddy could get a tax break.
My wife STILL thinks it was MY FAULT the kids came early. That kid has always been a "Daddy's girl", so she thinks the kid listened to me (it would have been the first AND last time) and came 2 months early.

Mooommmmeee went into labor with our third on Dec 31st, but Miss Faith Jubilee simply refused to arrive before the New Year. Not only did it cost us the tax credit, but the deductible was reset on our insurance policy, which meant the OB charges that would have been covered on the 31st continuing over into the New Year.

Wow, Elfwood. My insurance company carried over any pregnancy related deductible to the next year. My daughter was born in April...

Even though Little_Aud was born on December 29th last year we didn't get to claim her because the adoption wasn't finalized. Next spring we can get the child tax credit and can deduct all of the adoption expenses from 2005. Any 2006 expenses will have to wait until the following year.
A December birthday didn't help us at all!

I work in a hospital. Every time a baby is born here, they play Brahms's Lullaby over the loudspeakers. Several people have noticed in the past week or so how often the Lullaby has been played lately. In fact, they just played it (twice in a row, indicating the birth of twins) right before I posted this.

We planned both kids for the summer, for two primary reasons. First, I didn't want my wife to be pregnant during the hottest part of the year, and second, I wanted to avoid the possibility of inclement weather hindering our trip to the hospital when the baby was on its way.

I think I am missing something. I don't understand why it would be better financially to have your baby born at the end of December than the beginning of January. How does this tax credit work?

If the baby is born in December 2006, you can claim him/her on your 2006 tax return (and going forward). If the baby is born in January 2007, you wouldn't be able to claim him/her until your 2007 tax return.

What Mr. Furious said, plus, you get the benefit of claiming the child for the full tax year, but for most of that year, you have not incurred any expenses to feed, clothe, and house the child.
