When Charlotte's Web, the classic children's novel about a determined girl, a naive pig and a noble, vocabulary-building spider, was turned into an animated movie in 1973, its author was disappointed.

Are you kidding? I love that movie! It's a classic. Sure, it's not the book, but I thought it was great. Maybe not the best animation, but it was sweet. I've got a lot of nostalgia for it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was underwhelmed with the movie. I hate when movies have songs inserted where they aren't needed.

quote:But the movie adds more coarse barnyard humor and several new characters. It has several un-White-like flatulence jokes, which went over well with kids at a New York preview Saturday. Karey Kirkpatrick, who co-wrote the screenplay, says, "That felt like what cows do. It was in the ether, no pun intended."
[sarcasm] Ah, flatulence jokes. I *knew* something crucial was missing from the E.B. White novel and the 1973 animated film, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I feel so cheated, now. I mean, come on, people! Any entertainment geared primarily toward children and young adults *must* contain flatulence jokes! Everyone knows that!
God bless the filmmakers for finally correcting this glaring oversight. [/sarcasm]

I saw the new movie. It isn't perfect. It has a few added things that contribute nothing. But, as a fan of both books for over 30 years, I have to say it was much closer to the original work than that movie they had the audacity to call Stuart Little. My son, who is eight, agreed. It adds nothing of worth to the story but it also doesn't destroy a classic. For that, I give it three solid stars and a recommendation to go ahead and see it if you love this story.

I never read Charlotte's Web. I loved the cartoon when I was little (I still get Templeton and Gussie singing about the fair in my head.) Saw the "live action" movie just last night and loved it even more! I even cried when Charlotte died! I plan on buying the book soon, and DD wants the movie as soon as it comes out on DVD. If the movie was that good (fart jokes aside,) I can't wait to read the book as part of our bedtime ritual!
