quote:Yay! I got Final Fantasy XII. I like it so far; the combat works much better than I thought it would. My only complaint are the cutscenes can get ridiculously long; I like a good story as much as the next person, but why should I sit there and do nothing for 20 minutes? I need license points, dammit!
You'll be happy later in the game then. They definitely took people's complaints about FFX being one long movie/cutscene to heart. In FF12 you play for long periods of time without encountering any story or cutscene whatsoever. It's actually one of my complaints about the game (although I love the gameplay, it overshadowed the somewhat lacking story).
Hmmm...really? The cutscenes in FFX didn't actually bother me that much. At least the characters were usually DOING something. In FFXII, so far all it is for me is people standing around and talking about politics. Except for the opening. That was pretty kick ass. I would like to see more of that.

Radical Dory, I should make it clear that I preferred the long cutscenes that progressed the story in FFX over FFXII's methods. The story in FFXII was definitely people standing around talking politics, until the end, where it redeemed itself (just a teeny tiny bit).
However, the major complaint about FFX was "It's the best movie I've ever played." Meaning, of course, that people felt that they were only moving their character along a set path towards the next cutscene. I didn't agree with this, but I'm sure Square heard those complaints, and it more than likely influenced FFXII more than a bit. They definitely did a great job increasing the gameplay, but I think they just forgot the story at the door.

The only problem I had with FFX storywise is that you couldn't skip the cutscenes. I had a problem with losing at certain bosses so I had to sit through cutscenes again and again only to have my ass handed to.
I'm also playing FFXII as well, and I can see why some people don't like the story so much. Though I do have to say that the battle system is so much fun though. I'd never thought I'd enjoy overleveling so much.

Been playing Twighlight Princess and am in love. Its a fantastic game, which is stunningly beautiful, even against more powerful systems. The puzzle difficulty is set about right, producing satisfaction on completion, but never acting as a major barrier to progress. Characterisation is excellent, and the fantastic use of facial expressions and animation makes up for the lack of voice acting. However I do feel that the sound effect accompanying appearing text isn't constructive to maintaining mimesis.
Environments are varied and atmospheric, and although I've only completed one dungeon so far it was well structured and interesting. The first 'Boss' battle was perhaps slightly easier than it should have been and infact I found an earlier minor boss to be more challenging.
Its also my first experience of a 'proper' game on the Wii, and the wiimote feels natural. I am however getting a bit of a sore arm, although this may be a side effect of sleeping on the floor, rather than swinging my remote. However the wiimote does work especially well for aiming, although my tendency to jump to my feet when I get excited means that I suddenly find myself having to aim lower than I previously had.
However overall I think Zelda is a serious contender for the title of my 'Best game of all time.' (Currently the top three are Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle and PoP:Sands of Time.)
Had a golf tournement in Wii sports with the whole family today. Great fun, and even got my grandmother involved. Menwhile my uncle is a bit jealous and seems to have plans to get one for himself. Had he left on time and caught the sales on the way home then I'm pretty sure that any Wii still on the shelf wuld have been snapped up. Couldn't get my mum involved, but as she was wincing everytime a hand shot towards the TV I think I mknow why.
Boxing (Also Wii Sports) was great fun, and was a major workout. Of course I was playing with highly exagerated movements, but wheres the fun in just twitching it.
Overall I'm very happy with the Wii, as it achieves exactly what I hoped, an entirely different experience from my usual zone of PC gaming.

James, your whole family can play Wii Golf? Thats the one game we can't do properly. We get it near the hole, but then can't putt gently enough, so its blind luck whether it stays in the hole before we hit the limit of 10 strokes. I should mention that we lost the manual already, so maybe its explained there. But I've tried all kinds of motions and it just doesn't seem sensitive enough at the low range. If you go very gently it doesn't register any movement. Just a little faster and you're near the maximum power and it goes off the green. The hole is often within the 1/4 distance marker, and its impossible to hit it softly enough not to overshoot that.

Oh dear...memories of the damn Seymour battle...playing over and over...they're coming back! Argh!
Yes, I am at least grateful for skipability.

It was a bit difficult to get the hang of at first. I found that putting worked best if you flicked from the wrist rather than swinging. It feel slightly cheaty but works. I agree that more sensitivity is needed at low speed. ( This post was written using the wii opera web browser. It's cumbersome but not as bad as you may expect>
