James Blunt seems to fit everyones love/hate relationships with musical artistes, but this video should raise a chuckle

It's one thing for the conservative British magazine to criticise rock and pop musos for being pop and rock musos. It's another when it hits them for being boring - and they're right! When conservatives start yawning, something's amiss...

I hate to admit that I quite like the chorus in that "Three wise men" song, about the semi by the sea. Even if it is formulaic and doesn't make much sense and could have been sung by any generic David Gray type singer and the appeal will probably wear off quickly.
I like the bit in the video where he jumps off a cliff too.

I don't think this warrants a separate thread, but does anyone else think that the intro to "You're Beautiful" sounds like the "Lonely Man" theme heard at the end of The Incredible Hulk?

Jay Temple, you may have just solved the mystery of why I actually like this song. Until now I suspected subliminal messages.

I've always found "Beautiful" to be a very creepy song. He sees a girl, who's clearly in a relationship, on the subway, and then goes home and obsesses about her to an unnatural degree. If the video is to be believed, he's so obsessed over this nameless girl that he's prepared to fling himself off a cliff because he can't sleep with her.
Where I'm from, we call that "stalking."

Don't forget his use of the phrase "I've got a plan" that's pretty creepy.

The creepiness of the song is exactly what makes watching teenage airheads go berserk over him so hilarious. "OMG liek he's singing it to meeee!"
What's funnier is that he seems to realize this.
That parody is great, and the MadTV one next to it isn't bad either.

the original video was slated for having been done "on the cheap" presumably hence the parodies. however, I think this is its strongest point

no need to be ashamed for liking what you listen to...when i first saw blunty at glastonbury last summer (in the acoustic tent to 20 people) I was really impressed with his voicing on "Your Beautiful" it also has has a likeable melody even if the lyrics are a tad depressing with the suicidal overtones. He's come along way with a US no 1 in his pocket when he appeared on Oprah(or so i'm told ) Is the cd "back to bedlam" over rated? Let's see if he's still around in five years time...

I'll admit, I've never seen the real video. Just now I did a few searches, but all that comes up are the videos of everyone else on the planet lip synching whilst disrobing. Anyone have a link to the real thing? For, uh...comparative research.

They play this dang dang song every morning on the radio. Like Jay Temple, I too thought, "WTF? The Incredible Hulk theme is on the radio?" and then he sings, and I think, "Good gravy, he sounds like Andy Gibb." Then the lyrics are creepy. Then I saw his video of him just standing there on a cliffside taking off his clothes slowly and jumping off at the end.
So...I guess his "plan" in the song is to kill himself?

I read an interview with him in Blender and he was actually pretty funny. Apparently he often makes things up during interviews to entertain himself. I like that. The lyrics are still creepy though.

I guess I must be ashamed for liking this song.
Regarding the suicide in the video, I had heard one quote by Blunt that calls the supposedly suicidal message of the video into question, "You can fall in love, jump into love, or leap over the edge." I always took the video to be a metaphor for this, and that the boy isn't REALLY taking all his clothes off and jumping into icy waters. Since, y'know, even that doesn't make much sense with the songs "I'll never be with you" lyrics. Why wouldn't he just shoot himself, after all?
I initially liked the song for the excellent way Beauty and the Geek used it (the winning geeek - this was back at the beginning before we knew he was the winner though - talking about his anxiety and that he's there at the house to try and overcome that anxiety, not just to win a bunch of money.) After that, they used it in the 100th episode of Smallville, and it was on from there. There's no way I couldn't like it now that I associate it with Smallville.

I just like his voice. I know a lot of people talk smack about him (or whatever it is the kids are saying these days) but the way he sounds is enjoyable to me. I recently heard two of his other songs and didn't like them though. I still liked his voice, but the songs were kind of meh.

I was listening to the song the other day and it struck me that it's the beauty of the melody (and, yeah, he sings it well) combined with the creepy lyrics that make it kind of weird. It's almost as if he's kind of congratulating himself for drooling over a woman on a train who's with another man.
By the way, I didn't know Pingu has a voice?

My friend just pointed out to me that this song is pretty much about one of my biggest worries.
I work in a retail store and a side effect of that is smiling at everyone I see, which is great at work, but if I go somewhere afterwards often I'll give a big friendly grin to anyone within sight. I've often said I'm worried someday I'll smile at some crazy loner and he/she'll start stalking me. Or maybe he/she'll just write a song about it .

I think his sometimes lighthearted music with the creepy lyrics makes his music something special (to me).
If you just listen to the melody from his song "Billy" (the chorus) without the lyrics it sounds like some happy music. The lyrics are going a totally different way though:
Tomorrow comes. Sorrow becomes his soul mate. The damage is done. The prodigal son is too late. Old doors are closed but he's always open, To relive time in his mind.
And I do like his voice. Nope, I won't be ashamed to admit it:
I like the music of James Blunt!

I've just realised: the 'three wise men' song has the same progression and similar melody to 'Tiny Dancer' by Elton John (lyrics by Bernie Taupin). 'Beautiful' is the Incredible Hulk theme....
Could the secret of his otherwise inexplicably HUGE success be in there? (You can like him - it's inoffensive, which is why it offends me)
