There are several candidates for "first computer" depending on your definition of "computer". Which of these characteristics are required: programmable, electronic, digital? This link cites a 1973 court case giving credit for the first electronic digital computer to Atanasoff and Berry. That computer was not programmable--it was build to solve a specific set of differential equations. I like the computer described by Feynman which ran Manhattan Project bomb codes and which consisted of adding, multiplying, and dividing machines connected by enlisted personnel carrying punch cards between them.
