I don't think something such as a Leatherman (I carry the dollar-store-special version, myself) is really a concern since it serves a practical, day-to-day purpose. More questionable would be something such as a hunting knife, or some sort of "specialty" knife such as a dagger or some such. Those are legal as long as they are in view though, as I said earlier.

I can't see carrying a knife for self-defense is a good idea for most people. It might scare off an unarmed attacker, but that's about the limit of it's usefullness. To be effective with a knife, you need training and the mental and physical ability to actually stab someone.
Very true Delta. I had a friend in Midland, Texas who had a mouth that got him into brawls. He pissed off a guy someplace who met him outside with three of his own friends. My buddy pulled out his folding buck knife to make them back off and all four of them pulled out their own knives. He folded his back up and told them he just wanted to scare them off. The other guys were pretty reasonable since they put their blades away and then they all had at it with bare knuckles as God intended.

I witnessed a similar incident in Belize, a group of pissed up special servicemen thought they'd rail on a Ghorka squadie who'd been inadvertently shunted into their table, spilling their drinks .
They sobered up pretty rapidly when the guy, all 5 foot 4 of him, pulled his khukuri so fast they didn't see him move. I can't recall what he said, it sounded like an apology to a warrior spirit, but that table of drunks shat it, recovered their poise and bought the rifleman a drink

My mom flipped out when I tried to carry a pocketknife around at age 12. She thought I was going to hurt someone or something with it. >_<
Right now I have a nice 3-blade pocketknife that I keep in my purse. As most others have said, it's wonderful for opening boxes [especially when they go wild with the tape]
