Nothing but personal conjecture. But what about 30, 40 or more men out to sea for months or years at a time with one woman (or just a few women).

That could be very bad luck, especially for the women.

This being based on that only officers would be likely to be allowed to bring a companion along for the ride.

I'm failing to see why that would be "bad luck" for the women...

Sounds like quite an adventure to me. [Big Grin]

If women are bad luck on ships, isn't every cruise doomed?

Yes, I have heard this from many different sources. It probably has something to do with menstruation, or just plain ol discrimination. Quite a few women pirates cross-dressed for years and were found out only when caught or killed.

Men, when stuck all alone on a boat, will get horny. Toss a woman into the mix, and somebody will probably get lucky...

Which means that somebody else will NOT get lucky.

Jealousy on board a vessel is detrimental to good order and discipline... hence, no women on board.

For the same reason that guys get all oogly eyed at women folk, put a figurehaad out front of the ship with a nekkid woman on it, and Neptune will be so taken with her physical charms, that he will forget to cause a storm that will kill all on board. Voila! The boat is saved!! And just by keeping the crew tight and having wooden boobies on the bow!!

Or at least that's the theory...

I thought the origin of that myth was because Poseidon had such a terrible lust for women (he was a serial rapist) if he saw a woman on a ship he would create a storm to sink the ship to get the woman. I remember learning that in some sort of Classic Lit class, but I couldn't bring anything like that up with google. Anyone else ever hear that?

Which makes having a bare breasted figurehead a little crazy, but according to NovaSS's link that was a much later development.

I love these questions where the answer depends entirely on whether or not you agree with the premise. Women being bad or good luck depends a lot on whether you even believe in luck, doesn't it? Or the ones where they want to know if some religious concept is "true." That's kind of a question you have to ask yourself, isn't it?

Unless they want to know if it's true that people think women are bad luck on ships. In which case the answer is yes, but not so much anymore.
