Just chiming in to add my reccommendation for a menstural cup - I was "converted" middle of last year, and honestly - it's the best thing.

Sedorna you'd be surprised how many lady-snopesters use some form of cup

I've stopped using my cup the past few months while I investigate some nasty symptoms that may or may not be endometriosis. If it's not the Dreaded Ms. E, I will probably go back to using it because tampons give me horrible cramps, not to mention leak, and pads are just nasty.

It's going to be a moot point for a couple of months anyway, as part of my treatment/testing is taking pills to stop my periods for a while. It's the first time I can ever remember being happy about a medical treatment.

Yay. and not yay...I really hope it's not the big E, Nonny Although, I do hope it's something they can easily diagnose and fix, just the same.

- odd - I remember one of my friends who was totally opposed to me getting a cup because of the risks of retrograde endometriossis. [Cervical specialist nurse, so she had some right to that opinion] Once she realised that it was different from a cap / diprhagm type of thing, she was okay about it, but would never use one herself.

I doubt that it's related to your symptoms, tho. [certainly hope not!! [Eek!] ]

I bought one for a friend who will be travelling the world for six months - she's nowhere near impressed with it. [shrugs]

It's not as yucky as it sounds.

Let me just say that because of my grandmother's inability to educate my mother about much when then time came, Mom took it upon herself to make sure that her girls had as much information as humanly possible.

She knew she had a lot of problems upon ... marriage.... so she talked to a lot of very close family relatives (she didn't make it a topic of conversation at family reunions or anything, heh!) and discovered they had similar problems. She then started researching the local library, and voila!

So yeah, it sounds bad, but it's really not.

Now, hearing my mother discuss the first time she had an orgasm ... THAT you want to avoid. [Wink]

I continue to be amazed at what I can learn on the snopes message board (been lurking awhile). I've never heard of the cup!

Not exactly the bath story, but my friend once told me when we were teens that if you went swimming while you were having your period, you would stop bleeding. Until you got out of the water. Then it would start all over again.

I believed that for a while too, until my mum set me straight. It was printed as fact by the Agony Aunt in Jackie Magazine. I remember it vividly, a girl had written in saying she hadn't started menstruating yet but was worried that she would start while in the pool on holiday and everyone would see. The reply was that she wasn't to worry as being in submerged in water 'stemmed the flow'. Nothing about the probability of actually getting your first period whilst on holiday and in a swimming pool. Bizarre.
I used to believe this, too. IIRC, it was contained in the booklet we girls received in the third grade after seeing a film about such things. The booklet referred to past old wives' tales about not taking a shower during your period being untrue. The booklet said to go ahead and shower as usual, but regarding the water in the shower, it said: "remember, not too hot!". Even as a third grader, that bit cracked me up.

The booklet also had pictures and descriptions of belts and napkins. At the time, I suspected it was some sort of surplus from 20 years previous (this was the late seveties) the school still had.

When I started shaving, my mom had some sort of problem with my shaving above my knees. I wore shorts and bathing suits all the time, so I don't think it was the whore factor. She was never real specific about her reasons.

I was just browsing the diva cup website that marr-ya provided and I noticed a poem written especially for the Diva Cup, I feel I MUST share it with you:
Diva, this is for you:

Because of this Diva I don,
I am no longer a slave to the 'pon
It fills me with glee,
To know that I'm free,
And saving this world we live on.

I go through my day with ease,
There is no string there to tease,
It catches it all,
Before it does fall,
I now live without boundaries.

So now when I go to the John,
There's nothing for me to check on!
And it is so great,
To know that my fate,
Is not in a Kotex nap'kon.

Diva must have come from the gods,
I think they have the best odds,
To have made something great,
That seems so innate,
And all who know share applause!
***********************************
Now let me sit down and compose a limmerick for my favorite sanitary product! That got me so tickled! Who in their right mind would write a poem for something like this! Oh my sides....

I'm one of those who feels icky if I don't get a shower every day, during that time of the month, sometimes I feel the need for a second shower. My mom actually introduced me to tampons when I was 13 as she didn't believe that old wives tale that tampons couldn't be used by virgins. I've just heard about those cups from this board, and I may try them the next time I have that monthly visit from Aunt Flo.

My mom thought it was really funny to tell my dad that the reason I had slapped a classmate soon before starting at age 12 was due to PMS. I was not happy.

While my family has always been ok with tampons (other than a couple of women who just find them uncomfortable), I have had friends who were not allowed to use tampons because they would "lose their virginity." And yes, it is quite possible to use them while still a virgin. It may have been uncomfortable at first, but I did it.

What I want to know is why they're occasionally uncomfortable to use.

I'm making a slight hijack here, but close enough to the subject to get away with, I hope.

How many of you found using tampons at first (or therafter) actually did hurt? [Eek!]

By the way, my Mom never shaved above the knee either, not because she thought it improper, but just saw no reason to. She did always remind me not to forget to shave the top of my big toes, however!

I went to highschool with a girl whose mother wouldn't buy her pads or tampons, her mother acually bought her sea foam spounges to use. [Eek!] She was suppose to use them, rinse them, and use them again. The girls in school felt bad for her so we'd keep extra supplies in our lockers for her to borrow.

I have to add, I have three older sisters so I knew what a period was and all. But when I got my first one(age 12) I didn't realize it until I walked out of my bedroom and my dad told me to go find my mother(I had blood running down my nightgown). Her reaction was to hand me one of those GIANT super absorbent OB tampons. The ones that don't come with an applicator and look like the size of a parsnip on Miracle Grow. I stood there looking at it thinking to myself 'you want me to put this, There?'. Thankfully my sister had some pads I used. When I got home from school my dad was home(mom was still out). He asked me how things went that day, and I told him what mom had gave me and he calmly put the paper down, said he'd be back in a few minutes and left. 20 minutes later he came back with a sack that had tampons, liners, pads, and 'body spray'. He told me to read everything first then ask him any question I might have had. I guess by the time he got to daughter #4 periods didn't bother him any. Up until the day he died he was the one I talked to when I needed someone.

I use my diva cup and flannel pads. I love washing instead of throwing away. If I ever have a daughter I hope that she can see the benefit of that. But I won't force her to be different than her friends, I'll just make sad faces and talk about tampons floating at the beach. [Big Grin]

I have never been able to use them comfortably, around drying, other discomfort, and leakage (I just can't get the things to not leak). I'm 36, never been pregnant.

I'm nervous about trying those cup dealies, because of trouble I've had with extraction of tampons or contraceptive sponges, so I stick with pads (and I spend a couple days each time soaking overnight pads within 2-3 hours).

I started out with the plastic applicator ones and had no trouble at all. When I tried the cardboard applicator ones, I realized why my mom never bought them. Sure, they have flushable applicators, but they are evil tools of Satan and must be destroyed. I have since discovered OB applicator-free, and for the most part I'm very happy with them. No leaks, which sometimes happened with Kotex. On light days, they can overdry, but not too bad. The "ultra" tampons were kinda painful to insert and remove back when I was an innocent maid. Since I started birth control, I haven't needed anything that heavy-duty anyway.

Did anyone else have to use an anatomy book and a mirror to find where to put the first tampon in? It actually took several months of trying before I could master it. But so much better than pads! I equate tampons vs pads to contacts vs glasses.

TMI ALERT!

THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING!

I've wondered that too. Sometimes I can't get one in comfortably and end up using a pad.

I had something even worse happen not long ago-I went in for my annual exam, and the speculum FELL OUT. I find those exams quite painful.

*nods* Yes, definitely. I find that tampons are almost excruciatingly painful for me. At first I thought that maybe it was just because I'm a virgin, but I asked my mom about it once and she said tampons hurt her too, even after having two kids. *shrug* I dunno. It's good to know I'm not the only one, though!

And back to the original topic, I definitely shower during my period - I'm one of the ones who feels really gross if I don't.

I've never had any problem or uncomfortableness (is that a word?) using tampons. I started wearing them at 12 or 13. I find my period is shorter by a day or two if I use tampons than if I only use pads.

On a slightly different note, why are dogs so attracted to used menstrual products?! This afternoon I had to play tug-of-war with my dog over a used pad. I was sitting on the toilet exchanging it for a new one and he started licking and sucking on the used one before I could get it in the garbage. Yuck.

Okay, [OFF TOPIC]but about the cups... the diagram on the divacup site shows that it's not very far inside... isn't that really uncomfortable? I use Instead and love them but they're one off use. Anyone used both and could offer a comparison? [/OFF TOPIC]

I have never ever heard of the "don't bathe" rule and, come to think of it, the only myth I heard touted as fact was one girl who told me that she had sex during her period and it made all the blood come out at once and her period stop. I believed it then, sounded plausible, but know now from practice that it's not the case.
