Elsewhere at this website I gave my Vietnam service. I was a E3/E4 Yeoman, an admin and personnel type, in Danang for a year. I don't claim to be a combat veteran. I have too much respect for those who actually saw combat to pretend I was one of them.

That said, why should I worry if I have your respect or not? Sorry, you're too much of a whiner for me to respect you. Since I don't have much respect for you, your respect for me is not something I'm concerned about. The only respect I have for you is that you're a veteran. But any respect that your possible combat service might warrant is offset by my disrespect for your present whining.

BTW, I was a submariner. How does that rank on the Dick Respectmeter?

Essayons to Peter H.:
quote:

Hey Peter H. get off the whiner issue. You may have spent 25 years with the Navy but you will only get my respect should you have been with the SEALs or on the PBRs. I worked with both along with building FSBs for the Green Berets. Boots on the ground and brown water warriors (Mekong Delta Navy – aka Mobile Riverine Force) are my heroes. I like guys who have been in combat.

Should you prove your combat experience, I will honor you but please beware that I have contacts that, within a day, will expose a combat fraud. I have done combat fraud exposures in the past.

Essayons, I don't honestly think that Peter H. really needs my help, but I have to make my feelings known on this one.

You raise the issue of his military service; when it turns out that he in fact had a long term of service with the United States Navy, you first belittle it, then raise the issue of 'combat fraud', which I can only see as an attempt to provoke. As Peter H. had not referenced his service until you raised the point, this is no only spiteful, but Trollish.

The soldier is worthy of respect for his readiness to risk his life for his country, and his willingness to give up his liberty to that end, but the good name of the soldier cannot - should not - be used to bolster a bankrupt cause; history, and the facts, make a mockery of the poem that sparked this discussion.

I know for a fact that in the UK there have been aid drives for areas devestated by natural disasters however most of the time it's through the Red Cross and as they always give aid, it may not seem like any foreign countries are providing aid.

It's also different providing aid to the US because the government is pretty much capable of handling itself. They're able to get food water and shelter organised far quicker than any overseas organisation would be able to.

[lol]

Now that's just lies.

The UK borrowed $4.3 billion from the US in the form of lend-lease and line of credit.

To this date, we (the people of the UK) have repayed around $4.1 billion of that debt, and with 2 further scheduled repayments of $142 million (Dec 2005) and $83 million (Dec 2006) we will have repayed that debt in full.

Apologies on a postcard to the ususal address please.

Doc J - most excellent post!

I'm still waiting for Essayons to admit that the poem in the original post was a nasty, mean spirited piece of clap trap. And that it dishonoured all those French soldiers who died for their country. Because for all the historical fact-tennis thats going on, the base fact is that the poem was a shitty thing to write.

quote:

*dons tinfoil hat* Oh give over, you have an overinflated sense of your own importance mate. Anyone who signs up deserves full respect no matter what their position or experience for being prepared to fight for their country.

And for someone who 'honours' those with combat experience you sure are quick to dismiss French soldiers who died to protect their country.

Dick Essayons,

I've given some details of my military service, so it's only fair to ask about yours. What branch of service were you in, how long did you serve, what was the highest rank you made, and what was your MOS/rating?

Canada is responding.

Tragedy knows no boundaries. Just like the the Canadian response to California wildfires and earthquakes in San Francisco.

So Essayons, you can rest assured that your viewpoint expressed has gone by the wayside, and that the US can be the recipient of charity.

Hey don't get me wrong, I think some of the posts here have been amazing. Informative, learned, compelling but there comes a time when it just seems sad to see all that erudition being so totally wasted.

yes, but isn't this "surely" the final beauty and hope of human existence? Isn't it the last thing left in Pandora's box?

if they had a puking "instant graemlin", I'd flame myself, but in the meantime I'll just be awfully embarassed at my own pathetic bout of lyricism (is that a word?)

I quite agree - to me the "surely" represents a hopeful view of humanity. What has impressed me is your persistent, direct and respectful effort to challenge even one of the most trollish posters to think beyond their own assumptions and prejudices.

My old sociology lecturer used to tell me that he believed that people were basically good, and that we should strive to recognise and foster that good. When pressed however he acknowledged that the evidence for this belief was very slim at times. Even so he believed it was better to hope for better.

As I now appear to be starting to glurge (ha! I just made a verb) I'll stop now.

Ahah! just because I'm a philosophy, not a sociology major, I'll say "people are perfectible/good" is a postulate, not something that can be proved or disproved. It's just something that makes it possible to believe there is a point to what you're saying.

I'm probably someone else's troll, but sometimes I believe it is best to stand up and be counted when intolerable things are being said.

That was an easy troll, though. And he's probably still lurking… (I think he's been hit by a hiver…)

You need to be very careful indeed.

I heard that a group of students dared a girl to chant "bigoted troll" in front of a mirror thirteen times - she did the dare by herself in the bathroom and they heard screams and when they rushed in she was unconscious - ever since then she can only eat freedom fries, freedom toast and freedom sticks.

I just sat here and read this entire thread and...

Alls I got to say is that although the original poem is a rehash of stereotypes, and has inconsistent meter and rhyme, it's good to see someone finally giving those cheese-eating surrender monkeys whatfor. In case you missed it, the latter part of that sentance was heavy in sarcasm.

Now, I do have a question for all y'all. I've seen this around the boards, but have no clue what it means - what is YOMANK?

Right. In keeping with the original topic, here, have some insulting, poorly written poems about various nations.

Shakespearian Sonnet Slandering Spain:

Oh Spain, how can your beauty be expressed
in such crude words, which from my humble pen
may fly like doves with wings of lead, repressed
by pretenses of truth, now and again?

For when I seek to write about your class,
your taste, your style, your cultural milieu
I find that I am speaking out my NFBSK -
how can I praise a nation such as you?

A noble thing - siesta in the sun
relaxing in the heat of summer's glow
but as you nap, the day's work goes undone...
or if it's done, then it is done too slow.

And now my poem's done, but though I go
remember this - mi vaca est in fuego!

Acrostic Abusing Australia:

Australians, our friends down
Under are known for
Steve Erwin, extremely
Toxic wildlife, drunken
Rowdiness, historical abuse of the native
Aborigines, and most importantly,
Losing against England
In the
Ashes!

Tanka Taunting Tonga:

Tonga? Huh?
Where the hell's Tonga
Anyway?

Limerick Lambasting Leichtenstein:

There was a rich man from the Rhine
Who journeyed to old Leichtenstein
Where he could relax
Without paying tax,
And now that rich man's doing fine!

Note that I don't necessarily actually believe any of the above. I'm basically just trying to keep this thread from dying.
