Comment: I was trying to find out why "Letter-R" is the designation for "landscape" orientation in copiers (rather than just "letter-L" or, more logically, "landscape." The only answer someone gave me once was that the Japanese, who made a lot of the copiers, labeled it "letter-r" after "randscape", since they had trouble pronouncing the 'l'. This has always seemed suspicious to me, but I've never been able to find any more definitive answer.

I might be wrong but I always thought R stands for Rotate. The default printing is Portrait. So, the printer has to rotate the document to print it in Landscape. I might be wrong though

Hmm. Well, the option for landscape orientation on some command line printer software is -L. I don't know what that shows, though.

My guess is that it stands for Right and that some copiers/printers also has a L for Left, depending on which way to rotate it. At least two of my printers use that terminology.
