I don't have MySpace, but I know a lot of people who do. This is only place I've read about it, but I thought I'd post about it, so you good Snopesters can debunk or clarify it.

Looked up myspace and saw profile for godofthenoose who claims his profile name was chanced. The strange thing I found was that was the only profile with godofthenoose as a name. If this was an operating virus you would expect to see 2 or 3 names. I think it's a windup someone trying to create an urban legend

From the looks of it this is real. It seems to be a worm not a virus. For more information you can go to Myspace forums/Myspace/general, there is about 18 pages so far on it.
Although it seems that possibly someone else has taken the worm, redone it and sent it out again.
It seems to put a code in the profile's "television" section. The best way to get rid of it so far (from what I've read) is to go into safe mode on myspace (not your computer), delete any scripts from your tv section, change your name back, and check if there are any other odd scripts on your page and delete those.

How do you get the virus? I was browsing through old highschool friends, and all of a sudden, when I clicked on my old friend Liam, this separate window popped-up (strange, because I have a pop-up blocker) explaining that he had previously been attacked by this virus... was that window what spreads the virus?

Hmm, I actualy find this extreamly interesting, mainly as its a new form of virus which doesn't infect a computer per-se but rather a browsing session.
Of course the CrossSite scripting exploit isn't new, (its already been patched in Opera at least) but this is the first attempt I've been aware of to make the code spread.

Please clarify for me. I thought that in order to get a virus you would have to download something or click something that auto d/l. I saw a recent fwd that says "do not add this person to your messenger list" b/c they supposedly are a virus...how is that if all possible?

There are a number of exploits being used here and at no stage is your computer itself infected. The problem arrises from a scripting process which allows scripts to operate across multiple domains or pages. Usually MySpace would strip out any javascript from the userprofile, however thanks to bugs in both MySpace and Internet Explorer this user was able to prevent the script from being removed and it was run instead. While the script could't for example delete a file from your comupter and would be lost when the browser was shut down it is able to communicate with MySpace and do things like adding people to your friends list.
The 'Do not add this person to your MSN messenger contact list' virus is a hoax. And generaly you are correct that you would have to run a file. However, keey an eye on security bulitins as you never know when security exploits will be discoverd.

Do you have a link to the contact list hoax? I've looked on the UL search...nadda...When my friends send me crappy fwds I like to reply all and send info back to them and throw it in their face Posts: 1119 | From: Bronx, NY | Registered: Dec 2005

Unfortunately, I have encountered GoDoFtHeNoOsE on MySpace. Basically it put some code in my television section and wiped out all of the info I had in that section. While my profile was "hacked" friend requests were also sent out supposedly by me. I had to go to safe mode in my profile and delete the code that was there. I had to change all of my info (user name, password)and replace all of the lost info on my page. I was also able to cancel the friend requests.
