Comment: I recently learned of a rumor that, after a private screening of "E.T." in the White House attended by, among several others, President Reagan, his wife, and Steven Spielberg, Reagan turned and whispered to Spielberg, "Half the people in this room don't know how true this film is." The story continues that Reagan went to Roswell, New Mexico a few weeks later and made a speech with references to "E.T." Is there any truth to this story at all?

I think that Edmund Morris described the evening this way,
quote:The President saw "E.T., The Extraterrestrial" at a private showing in the White House and paid the picture its finest tribute. The President had visited planetariums as a child. When the two hours and forty minutes of camera reporting at last were over, he rose from his chair and wiped his eyes. "It is," he said, "like writing history with lightning. And my only regret is that it is all so terribly true."
