How much do you have to drink for the alcohol to almost have the effect of near-surgical anesthesia?
I would say that this guy is my hero, except that he scares me.

I don't think that's all that rare. I believe a good friend of mine had a 0.37 BAL one time. That did not work out well, he lost his two front teeth from running into a wall. Broke them actually, he had a large triangle section missing from exactly between his front two teeth.
I'll have to check with him about the exact BAL, but it was definitely significantly over the 0.3 level. Fortunately, he went to the hospital quickly before it could do any real damage. (well, beyond the teeth anyhow).
Ah, college.

I believe this is not uncommon in alchoholics.I knew of a guy years ago who consistantly had an BAC of .3 and above during his many, many arrest for public intoxication.

According to the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies
quote:Scientists use the term "lethal dose" (LD) to describe the dose (or in the case of alcohol, the concentration) that produces death in half the population (LD:50). Most authorities agree that blood alcohol concentrations in the 0.40 - 0.50% range meet the requirements for the LD:50

German actor Klaus Löwitsch (he later died of alcoholism) was once arrested for sexual harassment (he was later let go of this as it turned out he was innocent but was apparently fined 27,000 German Marks (then about 19,000 Dollars) for being overly drunk). He had 0.515 when arrested.

So, does that mean his blood is 180 proof ?

180 proof is 90 percent. This is .9 percent.

Unfortunately, BACs of .3 and up are not that uncommon anymore. If you're a hardcore drunk, your tolerance is such that you can reach pretty high BACs. I've seen reports of .4 or so, and I think the highest I've heard of was about a .6.

I used to work in a hospital lab and I know I've seen 0.45 before. Not routinely, mind you, but I've seen hundreds in the 0.3+ range.

I also work in a hospital and just the other day a woman came in with 0.45. She was talking to us (not particularly making sense mind you, but talking).

[1]It was found during his autopsy, that is.
At the Medical Examiner's Office where I work, we don't get BAC until weeks after the autopsy...when the toxicology reports come back.
