Everyone has probably seen the poster with the face of a Native American on it and the quote that ends either "...you can't eat gold." or "...you can't eat money."

(See also here for the full quote)

Now I suspect that like the popular version of the Chief Seattle quote that this is a pious fraud of the environmental movement, however I have never been able to track down just where this quote got started.

Has anyone on the forum had better luck?

According to this web page, it is a Cree proverb. I also found it referenced as Cree on a message board but thought this one was more "official" looking. [Smile]

I'm not so sure, from memory, the poster I saw claimed that it was said by a SW US tribe to the Spanish. I'm going to have to hunt down a copy of the poster to double check though.

I have nothing of value to add to this, other than pointing out that you can eat gold (just look up some fancier wedding cakes)

Aye, but "...gold has no nutritional value and cannot sustainably fulfill mankind's dietary requirements" doesn't really carry the same impact.

But of course, I could be wrong.

Graham, I just got around to searching a little more.
http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Native_American_proverbs
http://quotes.prolix.nu/Proverbs/
There were more sites, but these two were the easiest in which to locate the quote.
