Comment: I know James Arness of gunsmoke was 6ft 7in tall but I read
somewhere that on the set they built tables short and made him ware thick
soled shoes to make him look even taller. Is this true?

Why would they make a person who was allready over 6 and a half feet tall bigger unless his character was supposed to be taller than say 7 feet tall? That sounds like major overkill. Not that I ever watched Gunsmoke anyway,,,

I read that till basketball players started becoming "actors" (*snort*) that he was the tallest leading man in Hollywood and that his co-stars were placed on boxes and such to be in frame with him.

Frog-we still watch "Gunsmoke" in this house-Feathers

snopes: Could the original commenter have been confused enough to be trying to talk about James Arness' role as the intelligent carrot in The Thing (from another world)?

I think the writer of the OP was probably confusing James Arness' natural height and tales of Western stars of less-than-impressive stature who were supposedly built up on camera through the expedient of sets with artificial perspective (i.e., smaller than normal doorways).
